Its a familar enough news story, the sort of inconsequential event that crops up from time to time. But its interesting the spin that the different media outlets put on it.

this is not a suprise and these types of events are quite normal in what has to be one of the WORST primary and secondary public education systems in the country, if not the entire world. the best possible thing anyone could do for their childs' primary or secondary education if they live in San Bernadino or even the state of California is home-school them or MOVE.

Actually one of the houses is in the town nearby. I'll tell you what the local news has to say about it tomorrow.
Basically they claim to be wiccan. I think he was just trying to cause problems myself. From hearing his interview on the news.

Boys wearing make up has no buisness in school. It draws negative attention to themself and disrupts class and normal goin ons with that negative attention.

And the only thing suspension does is give them a legal 5 day weekend. When I was supsensed from school for fighting I did nothing but watch tv and goof off. The school had provided me a mini vacation and when I got back I was a couple days behind in school stuff.

To be just as fair I don't think girls should go to school decked in 5 pounds of makeup either the way they do.

Ok, I was all set to agree with and support this guy, but then I read the articles.

I believe guys should be allowed to wear makeup. However, I think that both guys and girls should be limited to -minimal- makeup. He's wearing the kind of stuff I'd wear to go to a club. That doesn't belong in school. Period.

Also, I'm very curious what Wiccan beliefs are expressed in his makeup. I considered myself a Wiccan for several years, and studied it pretty intensely. There ain't nothin that says "you gotta wear makeup" nor, honestly, anything that really goes into makeup as worship.

Also, he mentioned his first ammendment rights. Hate to burst his bubble, but students, people under 18 don't have 'em. The supreme court has struck down over and over the right of minors to express themselves freely. It sucks, and I hate it, but it's also true.

If he wrote obscene words on his forehead with lipstick or eyeliner I'd say the school should act on that. Not because I object, but because it may be particularly offensive to certain people. Quite frankly he could tattoo any number of offensive words on his head and I'd not give it a second thought. But I can see how any number of rude words might be offensive to others.

But if he wants to wear "club make up"... or if he wants to paint his face to look like Bozo the clown what the hell would it matter? I couldn't give a rat's arse what someone does with their face as long as they don't want to use my t-shirt as Kleenex.

If you don't like it, don't look. If you don't want to be the kid's friend because he dresses or acts strangely suit yourself. He wants to express himself in a manner that isn't destroying school property or injuring students or teachers. Let him blow off whatever steam he's got by wearing make up and styling his hair. It's better than telling him "bottle up, suck it up and please don't blow up the school in another year or so".

As for his pink/red/green/purple hair - right on! I've dyed my hair a number of times. Well... I guess that must mean I'm going to hell and I plan on disrupting the peace too. Tough.

As someone who supports nudity as a personal choice, I really don't think this should be an issue.

It was NOT that long ago that girls weren't allowed to wear pants at all and boys weren't allowed to have long hair.

Restricting someone's physical appearance is a desire to conform based in fear and only causes more problems than it creates.

While I obviously don't expect the world to suddenly be ok with men wearing women's clothing or women walking around naked everywhere in the next year, I certainly don't understand the fear or need to restrict it.

The kid made front page of the local section. Geez I only did that once when I was a kid when I went up against the school board. Once on the front page of the sports section.
Never for anything like this though.

Not sure if anyone saw his photo. To me I'd suspend him because he was being a nuisance to the other children in class. Then again I believe in school children should get an education. Look's as though the school backed down and let him back in.

Equality means equal. If he wants to wear make up, a dress and heels with a garter thats his right. If not then maybe women should all wear skirts, have separate water fountains and assigned seating on school buses.
We fought way to long and hard to now turn out to be a bunch of hypocrites. We want equality in gender and races, we want no discrimination against us in the fetish or alernative community, we should not pass judgment in a negative light, and should support someone elses version of self expression.

This is something I have never really understood...(And please keep in mind that I am a fairly rabid supporter of the 1st amendment and people's right to expression)

Why do so many people feel that school is a place for an expression of individuality? I thought we went to school to learn the subject matter so that we may learn the skills necessary to become a productive member of our society. You want to express yourself? Great! Write an essay, paint a picture, build something, be an exceptional athlete, join a theatre group, chess club...whatever.

What happens when these kids go to work in the future? Is their boss going to allow them to wear a bright red mohawk and "wiccan" (although I know of no wiccan association with makeup) makeup while at work? Hey, as soon as you're home from school...feel free to staple your pecker to your forhead and squawk like a chicken if that's what floats your boat.

We have allowed our schools to be nothing more than a fashion show / AIMS testing factory. I'm for bringing uniforms into the schools and actually teaching kids how to learn....rather than how to take a multiple choice test.

I agree. I wore a uniform for the short time that I went to school and even my college has a strict dress code and students may be asked to leave class if they violate it. Many people say that we are adults and should be permitted to wear whatever they want, but I equate school with work. I would never wear outrageous clothing, hairstyles or makeup to any of my jobs (and I work in a theatre

) so I don't consider it appropritate to wear such things to any of my classes.

Makeup like that and goth dress has no place in schools. It's disruptive no matter what any of the neigh sayers say, it is. It causes a stir. That disrupts.

I agree school's not a palce to dress gaudy to express yourself. Your free time is the place to do that.

And Msmacomb I always wear skirts an dresses anyway* smart aleck gri/n* I hate pants shorts or those dumb high waders they call peddle pushers or half pants.

Laughs, ok Sia you get that one. but to me on average size women it looks like they are wearing A hand me downs to short B half their pants were forgotten or C they're expecting floods lol.

It isn't about being a hypocrite. This country gives each and every one of us the chance to have an education for free. Not all countries in the world do that.
Why throw it away? Why should we allow one child to throw our children's education away just because he or she wants to be a spectacle?
I say do away with all identifying marks and go to school uniforms. Take out all piercings...nothing identifyable at all during school hour's. That is for their recreation.
They'd get better education that way.
As Merc stated earlier...they have children within the California school system, they know best.
Although I must disagree when I was in high school. My cousin lived in California with me. Same grade I was in...tenth. Her parents moved to Oklahoma. Essentially the great state of Oklahoma told her she was finished with her education by their standards. She sat in a room for 4 hours a day for the remaining two years until she graduated. Just getting the required amount of credits and no real education.
There are states much worse than here. Although if you are the parent of the child you always think the state you are in is the worst.
I know some fine teachers in California.

Hmm, sissy is just curious here. What did the other kids wear when You went to school, Ma'am ? This sissy is suspecting that ALL the other kids must have worn heavy Goth outfits and really wild colored mohawk haircuts and heavy facial makeup, while You Yourself looked something more like the model child shown in the thumbnail photo below. How else can those of us that read Your posts on these boards explain how distracted You must have been when they were teaching basic English spelling and grammar at Your school, if not by such selfish negative attention seekers disrupting the normal "goings-on" in Your own classroom ?

So sissy has to fully agree with You, Ma'am ... if kids wearing makeup and mohawks are so distracting and disruptive to the other student body that they all grow up to write like You do as adults then their rights to free expression should most certainly be curtailed immediately. Who in their right mind could wish for such an unhappy and sad outcome ?

BTW, the San Bernadino Pacific High School officials apparently don't agree with either of us ... the boy was neither suspended for his mohawk hairstyle nor his heavy facial makeup, but for sporting a trench coat that he wasn't even wearing that day. Apparently trench coats are much more distracting to the other students than either purple mohawks or heavy Wiccan facial makeup (sic) and lipstick. It would appear that, just like You, Ma'am, all of the Pacific High School officials involved in this case were also very distracted by the sartorial appearance of their fellow class mates when they were teaching logic and reasoning in their own youth. This sissy would personally like to thank You, Ma'am, for showing us all here at CollarMe how severe and dangerous the ramifications of allowing children free expression in school can be in the long run.

I have seen them look rather odd I will admit. And I hated them when they first came out, but now I would hate to see them go out of style (especially if the new style becomes those knee length shorts, yikes!).
