I thought we went to school to learn the subject matter so that we may learn the skills necessary to become a productive member of our society. You want to express yourself? Great! Write an essay, paint a picture, build something, be an exceptional athlete, join a theatre group, chess club...whatever.

Preach Thorns...

What happens when these kids go to work in the future? Is their boss going to allow them to wear a bright red mohawk and "wiccan" (although I know of no wiccan association with makeup) makeup while at work? Hey, as soon as you're home from school...feel free to staple your pecker to your forhead and squawk like a chicken if that's what floats your boat.

Yup, agree, be as unique as you want to be there if it's not about putting on a show and grabbing for attention.

Am totally feeling you there...
Where I am, it's boys with pants almost off, and girls dressed like hookers... I'm all for that look if you know what to do with the attention once you get it, otherwise, tone it down until you can handle the consequences of your looks/actions.

I pray that no kid of mine ever expresses himself this way (at least not in his teens, and not while he needs to look for work outside of his own company); if he does, oh well, I've stayed away from psychotropic drugs long enough.
I'm All for being as wild as you want to be, when you are an adult and ready to deal with the consequences of your choices.. M

Say what? Why am I paying perpetual student loan than?
Are you talking about some other country maybe?

Sorry the thread got off track. All in all it was a good thread. People wavering in their opinions back and forth. It made people think.
However, I stayed on track. The original question was about a high school student.
This country gives all high school students a free education if they are willing to use it.

The classes are generally free, although now many students have to buy their own books (I know I did when I was in high school)

I didn't but I also know I was in a differnet generation than you are. Also a different part of the country. Here where I am we still get free books..unless of course we damage them or lose them. Then we pay.

At my high school we had to buy our books, sometimes we could sell them back to the underclassmen, but only if they wanted to buy them and if they were using the same books again.
I think it's just because of all the budget cuts they had, but it still sucked
