Status: offline 		If the Bible is the "Word of God" and the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" is a statement of fact as God's commandment; why is it that many "Act's of God" such as earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, etc; kill?

Maybe it's like selective enforcement. You know, like being caught speeding on the highway. Or in this case a more appropriate analogy are all of those cops who speed. Maybe when the "acts of god" occur he's just "off duty"?

*giggling* - I will bite!

Why does it have to be an act of God? Why can it not be an act of something quite the opposite.

How about Gods wrath? (ok... most people won't touch that one.... but hey, if we wanna be godless, lets realise that we have responsibilities and theres a consequence)

on the smae lines, or maybe something completely seperate - why can it not be humans that caused it? Weather conditions, earthquakes etc - could be caused by global warning and the disruption to the planet caused by mining, drilling etc - not say all, but alot.

Of course, bush doesn't believe that global warming is as bad as the scientists say it is, so the science must be lying...!

Well, yes. God created Nature and stepped back, giving man stewardship of the Earth. Hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes etc are simply natural processes. It is our responsibility as humans to learn about them, minimize their danger and maximize our relief efforts.

The phrase "Acts of God" has legal meaning, but its inconsistent with Christianity (as I understand it) to attribute natural disasters to God's will. I know that some folks, such as Pat Robertson, like to claim disasters as God's punishment but I think this is both silly and irreligious.

Natural disasters are simply natural processes. If the commandment to not commit murder has any application to these cases, it is that humans should not allow people to die and suffer through indifference.

I have a question and thought though Merc - all puns aside.

Like LaM stated, translation is iffy - but then it all centres on the word murder. So, when God creates say a natural disaster by your inference, He may murder innocents.

But then - innocent in whose eyes? Yours?

In any war - innocents die.... but hey, it's ok because 'we'(using the collective we) are bombing, killing, murdering - maybe - innocent people in the name of a just a 'right and 'just 'war in 'our(collective) eyes. These people 'sinned' against us - did bad things we didn't want them to do and asked them not to. They didn't listen so we must put down our foot and stop it. But it's ok - its an act of man for humanity.

Bit similar to Gods thoughts maybe?
