Camp Napawon
Wild Rose
Colin Trier
I've got a story for you. I used to stay at a summer camp called Camp Napawon, out by Wild Rose, near the center of the state. If I remember correctly, it's about 30 miles south of Stevens Point.

The land the summer camp was on is allegedly cursed by a bunch of gypsies who were mercilessly slaughtered there in the '30s. Ever since then, plenty of weird things have been going on.

The gypsies are said to visit people in the form of black cats with one white paw. Seeing one brings you bad luck, and many people at the camp have a story about encountering one of these infamous cats.

Also, there's supposed to be a ghost who haunts the area. This ghost kills people in their sleep, rips their hearts out, then hangs the heart up on a tree for everyone to see.

There's other stories I've heard too, like a camp quartermaster who was in a barn that was locked from the inside, and when they finally got the door open, they found him with an ax buried in the back of his skull.

Of course, some of these may just be campfire stories to spook us, but who knows what you'll find out there. I myself will tell you this:

I've never seen anything paranormal out there myself, but the place gives off a very bad vibe. It feels really eerie there, like the peace and serenity of the woods is just a façade and something sinister is waiting just around the corner.

You can feel it.

Well, that's all I know. And, if anyone else finds anything out there, let me know, alright?

Source: Story courtesy Colin Trier

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We like this story. We're not alleging it's 100% true or that any of it is true. We think it's representative of the kind of stories told around youth camps across the state. A little blood; a little mystery; a buried ax in the head. Good cheerful camp fodder! And who can ask for anything more?

f you have any campfire tales about Camp Napawon, please let us know!

Someplace I would go. I grew up wanting to know more about the unknown. Spent plenty of time in cemetaries at night. Dead people just want company like everyone else.

Interesting type place. Might want to visit there sometime. I went to this place called Versalle, MO and right behind the place I was staying at was old abandoned railroad tracks. Cant use them cause they are by themselves but in the night exactly 2:36:32 am you could hear the train loud and clear and the house would rattle like there was a train going by. And down the street there was a haunted house and you could hear people screaming out of it and see a baby floating past the windows. And a woman also appeared at the window sometimes and her stomach look like it was cut open. The story behind it is that it use to be a ritual house and that the woman was the one they cut open and took the baby from and the baby was the one inside the woman. They are forever looking for each other. I have seen these things first hand so I definately believe.

Thanks, but ... NO thanks. i do not like, nor do i wish to experience them at all. i've experienced enough of this topic, without having volunteered to do so, already. Thank you just the same.

As luck would have it, i have spent most of my 36 years living in the hometown of Lizzie Borden. Her house is not the only one in town that is haunted by spirits who are not shy in showing themselves. The house is now a bed and breakfast, and offers tours as well. i am probbaly the only native in town who has NOT stayed there nor taken the tour. Count me out, thank you very much.

P.S. Yes, i DO know that MOST spirits are not out to cause any harm, but the shock to the system one feels in actually seeing a ghost face to face for REAL will kind of kill off any interest in seeking any duplications of the experience.

I don't know if I've been lucky or unlucky all the haunted places I've ever stayed in nothing happened while I was there.
I grew up running after UFOs. Hanging out in cenetaries just to see the boys run when they heard a noise.
I had sex in a cemetary when I was a teenager. Dead people need fun too.

Today, I just go visit long lost friends in cemetaries. Actually I was quite the popular kid in school too. Not even the freak I sound like today.
I did once see a UFO. No weather balloon or anything in the sky that night.

Still no idea what it was. Other than a UFO.

I have a few that follow me.

They ah, LOVE Ray for some reason - they will even talk to him, which is very annoying to be around for.

Me? They just love to fuck with me, prolly cuz I get spooked and give them a reaction. A friend's ghosts at her house will actively mess with me just to hear me cuss it out.

I've had enough *activity* around me my whole life, that it's a given I kinda have to believe they exist. Especially since the one that's followed me since I was a young kid has this annoying thing of hiding money. He adores hiding money. Which can be fucked when he hides your paycheck. Which he has on three occassions. What makes it scary is he once took a wallet of mine in the 3rd grade - and didn't return it until I was in 10th grade. Luckily he's never pulled that with the rent money. He used to play with the dials on my stereo while I was looking at it. Now he just messes with Ray mostly, doinglittle annoying things like pretending he's me coming home, jingling my keys and saying hello, only I'm still at work, or playing with the hair on his arms, or things like that.

Poltergiest was a VERY interesting movie for me when it came out - and I saw that in the theatre to boot. LOL.

Really they just seem to want the occasional attention.

Makes life interesting. lol.

You know these whole "are there ghosts" or "are there UFO's" discussions are fun and can be very debatable. I love 'em. Personally, I have never seen a UFO so I don't know if they exist. I'm one of these, "show me" people before I believe. I have lived in a haunted house, however, so I believe in ghosts.

I think maybe I've seen ghosts. Well, not exactly seen them but known they were there. When my mom and sister passed away real close to one another. I do believe someone came back. Gone now. For a brief period.
It is soothing to me to believe there are ghosts. Yet, beyond small experiences I don't know.

As far as UFO's go. There are UFO's most definately. Unidentified flying object. Could indeed be a plane.
To think we are the only ones in the Universe well frankly that is naive. We could be the only ones in this particular universe. But as I argued with my teacher in the 4th grade. There were more universe's out there. Now we know I was right and she was wrong. Although I knew that all of the time.
Wish I knew how to get ahold of her now...hehe.

I'm originally from Pensacola, Florida. Perhaps you don't know that Gulf Breeze, Florida is actually a kind of "burb" of Pensacola. You must pass through Gulf Breeze to go from P'cola to P'cola Beach. For some time Gulf Breeze was considered the newest "home of UFOs." Strange things seen in the sky, tales of obductions by long time residents, odd things in the sky captured on video and still camera. MUFON spent a lot of time in Gulf Breeze and many people made a ritual of watching the skies together from one particular spot (often with results to their efforts - seen by everyone there).

You have to understand that Pensacola is also the "Cradle of Naval Aviation" and surrounded by many Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard bases, so there is a lot of opportunity to see "strange things in the sky." I have, however, seen things in the sky (both at night and during the day) that just defied explanation by my understanding of physics. Large balls of light (that looked something like a LARGE fireworks rocket without the tail) zooming across the sky seemingly close to the water line (at the beach) and then taking an apparent 90 degree turn (without slowing down at all) up into the sky and then just "poofing" out of sight. Things of that sort were fairly common place and I've seen them while in the company of others who also saw them. They were unidentified (at least to us), they were flying and they were objects. I've seen specs that looked like a bright star move across the sky, stop for a little while and then move off on another tangent not at all similar to the direction they were going or coming from. <shrug> Who knows what they were? I miss the starlit sky. Now I live close to NYC and there is just too much light pollution to really SEE the sky here.

My exhusband's lifelong friend had a ghost (they were convinced it was following his wife who died of diabetic complications). We would often leave the house, locking it on the way out, realize we forgot something and go back in (within 30 seconds of having left) to find every cabinet door open and every drawer in the house pulled out. Keys placed in places we could NOT have left them in (under the sink behind the cleaners - a place none of us went to much! hahaha).

Do I believe there is more than what we are able to see or measure? You bet. Do I think that something happens to us after we die other than ceasing to exist? Yup (although I don't subscribe to many contemporary beliefs). Do I think these phenomenon are our aunts and uncles come back to communicate or just hang out? Not especially. Do I think eventually we will be able to see or measure these things? Yes, eventually. Do I believe these things can hurt us? No, not in less we are willing to participate in such (much the same as many things that hurt us in meat-life).

They certainly make for interesting times, though!

Hmm, some of the people who I find the most intellectually exciting on this board have now posted they do believe in UFO's and ghosts. Should I allow that to alter my beliefs? Not that they necessarily need altering.

Hmm, what to do, what to do?

I currently like in Ft Walton Florida which is within about 30mins of Gulf Breeze, I have never seen anything I thought was not of this earth. I have seen a lot of things that I have not been able to identify, but I see all kinds of plans and crap I can't identify. Do I believe in UFO's and aliens... I believe tyhey are possible, but I have not seen them.
I definately believe in Ghosts. I also have one that follows me. He's found of taking stuff and then a month or more later when you have given up and moved everything in the house three times... there it is, right where you know it can't have been the whole time. He's spoken to me once and a few other wierd things. I know my house is haunted and have had several people see the same kind of things I have.
I can't say I know for sure what they are. Are they dead people? I think some of them are. Are they 'memories' that a place holds? Maybe. I think if you have a home where someone did the same thing, the same time everyday for 60 years, it shouldn't be too much of a surprize that after the person dies a fantom of that remains.
I've had ghosts interact with me so I have to believe at least some of them have some kind of intelligence.
Well, that's my two cents.

DaVinci Painted what looks like a UFO in one of his madonna paintings. For the life of me I can't remember which one.

As far as hauntings and u.f.o."s I beleive in both. At one time I was of the mind set until I saw one or you could prove to me that they do exsist for sure, I will give you the benifit of the doubt. Till one summer, here in central wis. we had a lunar eclipse, I and some friends were out with our children watching the eclipse, when all of a sudden this red dot started to follow the "X" of the railroad crossing sign next to my home. Well needless to say we searched all over for someone to be playing a joke on us, or the possible cause of it. went so far as to take a small flash light and try to do the same thing ,but discovered we would have to be right on top of the sign to make it do the same pattern, therefore that wasn't explanation. So whether it was a u.f.o. or what, who knows. As far as ghost I definately beleive in them. First my sister had lost a baby during childbirth and she swears that everytime someone in the family is going to die the child appears to her, as if to prepare her for the event and someone does die, and this usually happens at same time I dream of death and that always happens just about the time someone in the family does die and usually the only time I dream at all. then I use to work cleaning in an local 3 story office building, here in my hometown of Merrill, and when I started to work there they told me of the resident ghost, and I am thinking, "yeah right you are just trying to scare me," See they said that the ghost was mostly on the second floor and one back stairway, and the ghost would pull out drawers of the workers desks and do all sorts of teasing things. Well that became my area to clean. One night I thought I saw someone ducking around the file rows there, like they were playing hide and seek, and thought it was one of the other workers trying to scare the sh** out of me, so laughing I went looking for them and no one was there, then the "shadow like" figure did this nightly to me, so I called him shadow, I say him because as time went on he let me see him, in a shadow type form and he was from the time of abe lincoln, top hat and coat just like abe's, then he would make the plants move like a wind had gone thru them and the curtains move, and yes I even seen him pulling out desks drawers, then a couple of times it was like he talked to me and I got the impression that he was caught in a fire in a motel that must have sat on the land, in the building of the city of merrill way back when. So that experience alone has pretty much convinced me, yes if you are open minded enough and not afraid when they do approach you they do show themselves to you. By the way another place, historic landmark in the city of merrill also has a rumor of being haunted, but then when I did some research on it, for a writing course I was taking, I decided it wasn't really haunted as much as it was cursed, am going to look and see if there is a web link for it, but perhaps you might want to try it would poss. be under, Scott Mansion, in Merrill Wi. and see for yourself. Thanks for letting me share. and enjoy the message boards, I am learning so much here.

The painting is the Madonna with StGiovannino. There is an explaination that it wasnt painted by DaVinci, but by His disciple, Lorenzo della Fontana, as the painting was completed after Da Vincis death.

Yikes @ the culture
