Wow, an event of this nature acctually took place. For years I've been hearing this story over and over. I'm still hearing the one about the 18 yr old who went out on is own in anger when his dad gave him a bible instead of a car after graduation. Then 30 yrs later after his dad died, the guy opens the same bible he threw down on the ground only to find the car regestration.

It's really not odd for bullets to encounter objects. People just have to look at a guy "suited up for combat" and count the amount of stuff that's not skin.

Also, in movies when somone is shot and they are forced up and fly a few feet backwards...Bunch of crap....It was Myth-Busted, people who are shot fall immediately to the ground.

In the real world there are a lot of variables. Bullets go through stuff (trees, people) on their way to the target. Lots of "bullet hits" are actually shell fragments. In making millions of shells (particularly in places where quality control is shoddy like Russia) propellent fill varies a lot. Ranges vary a lot. I've got a scar on my arm where an AK round hit. It went in and stopped. We figured it had traveled about two miles based on the angle. Some things can't be completely examined in a half hour.

Angle is important too. If you can redirect the bullet you don't have to deal with the full energy. It's not "stopping" the bullet but it can save a life. One really odd story came from what they called "police science" back when I was an undergrad. A guy takes a .38, puts it against his chest and pulls the trigger. About a hour later he wakes up. Not much blood and decides not to try round two. Two days later he goes to a doc with pain in his balls. It's the .38 round. It had bounced off the sternum, slid under the skin in a spyral and ended up down there. The doc is able to find the bruise line. Try pointing a gun at your chest and you'll notice it isn't easy to get a 90 angle.

Still he's gotta be one of the luckiest guys in the world.

As for the bullet impacts, I saw that show. With most military ammo these days, the bullet passes through and only transmits a fraction of the energy but if the guy is wearing armour or it hits a bone, there's a big difference. Recently there was video of a guy in Bagdad get hit and blown right off his feet. Not just falling down but slapped back into the APC behind him. Since he had armour he not only survived but came up shooting, still the full impact of the snipers bullet was transferred to him.
