DameDarkness -> Sent to me in an EMAIL its makes more sense than anything else (2/23/2006 7:03:57 AM)

Some people understand life better, And they call some of these people"retarded"... At the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash.

At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and
began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back......every one of them. One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, the cheering went on for several minutes.

People who were there are still telling the story... Why? Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course. If you pass this on, we may be able to change our hearts as well as someone else's.

"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle."

wonderful post :)

fastlane -> RE: Sent to me in an EMAIL its makes more sense than anything else (2/23/2006 8:43:07 AM)

Fastlane looks up and waves to Windy!

I coach kids baseball and I'll never forget the time I reamed out one of my player's for not running out a ground ball. I looked him in the eye and said "Act like a million dollar pro, not a spoiled brat."
To which he replied, "I was!"
LOL, he cracked me up!

That was an excellent thread to share.....Thank you!

Kevin

This is so special--when the boy and I started talking, we both shared the same feelings--W/we are committed to touching hearts---

Hmmm, smells like nonsense...

...and it is at least half nonsense.

Chaingang, I'm not too surprised. It was a bit too sweet for me.

Chaingang not monster. Chaingang nice.

I love fairy tales, legends, and mythology. Seriously. I believe such stories have at their roots an important moral or perspective on the human condition. Perhaps such stories contain psychological truths and are most useful where there is no more straightforward way to discuss certain ideas - such information being communicated via metaphor or analogy.

The danger is in believing that such beautiful ideas are therefore also somehow true. I trace this back to the medieval notion of beauty being equated to truth or goodness. Of course, ideas can be both beautiful and false, but that doesn't make the stories not worth telling - they should simply be told in the correct context.

To me this Special Olympics story should be told in the form a fable - something we know to be untrue but that also contains an important internal message.

Wow, an event of this nature acctually took place. For years I've been hearing this story over and over. I'm still hearing the one about the 18 yr old who went out on is own in anger when his dad gave him a bible instead of a car after graduation. Then 30 yrs later after his dad died, the guy opens the same bible he threw down on the ground only to find the car regestration.

As often as I heard the special olympic story as if it was just a few years ago, I was beginning to think it was only an urban legend. Great research work Chaingang

I think you did a good thing in pointing out that this was not entirely accurate. I am not one to completely buy into the feel good stories like this, but you have to admit that it is a touching premise and it carries a valid point. While I do not believe that there is any inherent danger in believing something like this, we are also taught a valuable lesson that the use of exaggeration to embellish a story based on fact is just that, an exaggeration.

And, I suppose, later found a rusting 1970 Ford... [gag]

Stories like these tell a lot more about the teller's agenda than most people want to admit. I recall a Stars and Stripes article about a guy getting shot in the days before the kelvar chicken-suit and the bullet is stopped by a bible. Truth came from a guy in his platoon. It was a rolled up Playboy.

Personally, I find god on both of these stories... I'd just rather hang out with the Playboy god than other uptight guy

[grin] but did it become a bible in the media?

It's really not odd for bullets to encounter objects. People just have to look at a guy "suited up for combat" and count the amount of stuff that's not skin.

I haven't felt this disillusioned since my dad shot Santa Claus.

I though the zippo had the cross on it. [:D]

Since you have affiliation with the SCA, what do you now about this story?

Newbie walks onto the field with his newly made arrows that looks legal. A guy blocks it with the shield. Turns out, the newbie never took the arrow head off the arrow. The arrow not only breaks through the rubber ball but goes through the shield and into the guys arm. Out comes the pharse "Who's arrow is this that shot my arm?"

As Amtgard became popular, the story circulates into where a newbie walks onto the field with what looked like legal arrows. He was shooting at people all day but never hit anyone. So he finally decided to shoot a tree. He hits the tree but the arrow decided to stick inside the tree rather than bounce off it. Everyone freaks, dismantles his arrows, and bands the newbie from the event.

Not a zippo, not a cigarette case, not a pocket protector and not even the sides of a car, think Bonnie and Clyde, Topac, and BiggySmalls.. also, I watch Myth-Busters.

Also, in movies when somone is shot and they are forced up and fly a few feet backwards...Bunch of crap....It was Myth-Busted, people who are shot fall immediately to the ground[;)].

In the real world there are a lot of variables. Bullets go through stuff (trees, people) on their way to the target. Lots of "bullet hits" are actually shell fragments. In making millions of shells (particularly in places where quality control is shoddy like Russia) propellent fill varies a lot. Ranges vary a lot. I've got a scar on my arm where an AK round hit. It went in and stopped. We figured it had traveled about two miles based on the angle. Some things can't be completely examined in a half hour.

Angle is important too. If you can redirect the bullet you don't have to deal with the full energy. It's not "stopping" the bullet but it can save a life. One really odd story came from what they called "police science" back when I was an undergrad. A guy takes a .38, puts it against his chest and pulls the trigger. About a hour later he wakes up. Not much blood and decides not to try round two. Two days later he goes to a doc with pain in his balls. It's the .38 round. It had bounced off the sternum, slid under the skin in a spyral and ended up down there. The doc is able to find the bruise line. Try pointing a gun at your chest and you'll notice it isn't easy to get a 90 angle.

Still he's gotta be one of the luckiest guys in the world.

As for the bullet impacts, I saw that show. With most military ammo these days, the bullet passes through and only transmits a fraction of the energy but if the guy is wearing armour or it hits a bone, there's a big difference. Recently there was video of a guy in Bagdad get hit and blown right off his feet. Not just falling down but slapped back into the APC behind him. Since he had armour he not only survived but came up shooting, still the full impact of the snipers bullet was transferred to him.

I've actually heared this one firsthand. :) Though I have no doubt it's happened to many people. Seems like it's a common mistake to make,a ctually. Didn't stick in the guy's arm, just stuck in his sheild.

The other one I just heared that was fun. (a true one too :)

New person comes out on the feild with a sword. Martial gets it to inspect it, says it feels heavier than normal, asks the guy what it's made out of. Guy shrugs and says he thinks it's regulation.

Martial wants to test to make sure it won't hurt anyone. Takes a swing at a park bench. The sword -sticks into- the table.

Turns out the guy had made his sword out of a machette covered with a couple layers of foam and tape.

Being an avid AR and AK collector I have to disagree.
The twist rate on the current M4 and M16 models is 1:8, they velocity is about 2323 or so feet for the 55gr bullet. If the bullet has a copper jacket it tends to "grenade" inside a soft target due to impact and the spinning forcers where many little peice of copper jacket get shredded and ripped off. Although Im pretty sure that the 62gr green tipped bullets dont do this. Now the classic AK round (7.62) likes to hit things leave the copper jacket behind in the firt object that it hit and the core itself will keep on going.
A really good site for this is http://www.theboxotruth.com/ they have photographs along with the commentary.
Sorry for my long post, I love being a keyboard commando

Thank you for this....

Knowing to ones self that this was only "some" of the story....shame others have to take a "Let's feel good for a minute" moment.... and tear it all apart.

Bet it's hard to find someone to watch a movie with you... the way you tear it all apart.. how can you take the time to enjoy the movie...

Or looking at a pretty sunset... you're so busy tearing it apart about being all pollution... you miss the "feel good" portion about it.

I do not covet what is not real. The "feel good" portion of it is being satisfied by the real and the possible.
