MasterJoe50 -> WARNING TO ALL COLLARME USERS! (2/14/2006 8:34:01 AM)

THERE IS A 'SCAM' RUNNING THROUGH THE COLLARME WEB SITE THAT YOU SHOULD TAKE NOTICE OF, AND BE AWARE OF!

IT STARTS WITH A LISTING OF A 'BEAUTIFUL' FEMALE, WITH A U.S. LOCATION LISTED, HOWEVER AFTER INITIAL CONTACT, THIS PERSON STATES THAT THEY ARE IN NIGERIA AT THE MOMENT.

THE 'TYPICAL' STORY IS THAT THEY ARE THERE TEMPORARY BECAUSE OF THEIR FATHER'S DEATH, AND WILL BE COMING BACK TO THE U.S. SHORTLY.

THEY 'INSIST' ON COMMUNICATING ONLY THROUGH 'CHATTING' ON YAHOO IM.

HOWEVER, 'AS ONE STORY GOES', THEY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY FOR THE AIRFARE BACK HERE, AND WILL PROCEED TO START THEIR 'CON' OF ATTEMPTING TO GET YOU TO SEND MONEY TO THEM WITH THE PROMISE OF COMING DIRECTLY TO YOU.

THIS IS A SCAM!

THIS IS ACTUALY A 'GUY' THAT HAD SECURED PHOTOGRAPHS OF A WOMAN EITHER SCANNED FROM A MAGAZINE, OR OFF THE INTERNET TO POST ON COLLARME, ALONG WITH A FAKE PROFILE.

IT WILL BECOME VERY OBVIOUS WHEN COMMUNICATING, THAT ENGLISH SKILLS, SUCH AS SIMPLE SPELLING AND SENTENSE STRUCTURE IS NOT OF SOMEONE BORN OR RAISED IN THE U.S.!

OTHER THAN THEIR ENGLISH SKILLS, THEY ARE 'VERY INTELLIGENT' IN THEIR ATTEMPTED 'CON'! COMING UP WITH PRE-PLANNED STORIES, GAINING YOUR SYMPATHY, EVEN PUTTING YOU ON THE DEFENSIVE, FOR NOT BELIEVING IN THEM!

SOME WILL OFFER A CELL PHONE NUMBER TO CONTACT THEM, HOWEVER BE ADVICED THAT WHEN CALLING A CELL PHONE IN NIGERIA, YOU GET CHARGED ON 'YOUR' TELEPHONE BILL FOR EACH AND EVERY ATTEMPT TO CALL, WHETHER YOU GET THROUGH OR NOT!

I HAVE ALREADY RUN ACROSS 3 POSTS ON COLLARME OF THIS ATTEMPTED SCAM!

BE WARNED! DON'T FALL FOR THIS!

I hope you didn't wire him money.

JohnWarren -> RE: WARNING TO ALL COLLARME USERS! (2/14/2006 9:57:04 AM)

Of course, it's a scam. Even a hick with hay still between is toes and still smarting from the fall off the turnip truck would spot that one.

proudsub -> RE: WARNING TO ALL COLLARME USERS! (2/14/2006 9:58:08 AM)

Collarme is aware of this scam and has posted a message to watch out for it that you will see when you open mail.

MysticalPhoenix -> RE: WARNING TO ALL COLLARME USERS! (2/14/2006 11:20:36 AM)

And it's not just "women" trolling for money from men, either. I just got contacted by a man who is looking for a "love relationship and assistance".

Got to agree with JW on that one. If anyone falls for such a blatent thing then it is simply the old adage about a fool and his money in action.

CM are aware that scamers try to use the site and do warn users on the mail screen.

sf-Sub -> RE: WARNING TO ALL COLLARME USERS! (2/15/2006 4:07:43 AM)

unfortunately a fool is born every minute... and people are still falling for scams like these...

John you have such a way with words, [sm=lol.gif].
To the OP I have begun chatting with people allegedly from NY/other states who turned out to be somewhere in east bum phuck (not the US), and quickly blocked the lying sacks. M

Lordandmaster -> RE: WARNING TO ALL COLLARME USERS! (2/15/2006 6:07:24 AM)

I'm going to stand up for people who fall for scams (and for people who know how to spell "blatant"). I've never understood why our culture has so little empathy for people who are conned out of money. We tolerate murderers if they play football well; we tolerate corrupt officials if they prate about God and country; we tolerate corporations with detestable business practices if they deliver television sets for $99. But one thing we will not tolerate is someone who trusts a stranger and is cheated because of it.

Well bully for you LaM, feel free to run round and hold the hand of every muppet who hasn't the basic common sense to avoid such obvious scams. I choose not to nor to waste any sympathy on them.

L&M
It's raining - should I come inside?

Will you feel sorry for me if I get wet?

BTW - Walmart is having a sale. The $99 27 inch TV's are going for $79 during President's Weekend, but you have to be one of the first 100 in the store. Bring a baseball bat to help weed through the crowd of laid off Ford auto workers.

In this month's Readers Digest - 80% of the people don't want to hear about your problems and the other 20% are glad you have them.

::shrug:: People can be mean. I applaude your compassion.

There are some scams like "the bank teller" and the "city inspector" that depend on the good nature of people to work. I can't really fault someone for falling for them unless they've been warned, but most scams like "spanish prisoner" or "I'll be your slave if you send airfare" depend on someone hopeing to get something they really don't have a right to expect. Them... I have little sympathy for.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: WARNING TO ALL COLLARME USERS! (2/15/2006 10:23:02 AM)

I have the ultimate solution to the problem of scams, telemarketers, and unwarranted charity calls... Be poor!

It works for me. There's nothing quite as satifying as having someone call me to invest in some bogus fund and having me be able to honestly laugh at them. I got a call the other day from a telemarketer asking for money for "XYZ" charity and I was honestly able to tell them, "Sorry. I'm balancing the checkbook as we speak and we have 86 cents to last us until Friday." It's amazing how quickly they say "Thank you" and hang up.

However, if anyone would like to remedy my situation, I accept payments in the form of cash, personal check, money order, or Visa swiped right down my ass crack. I'll even print you a receipt. [;)]

Lordandmaster -> RE: WARNING TO ALL COLLARME USERS! (2/15/2006 10:29:01 AM)

Well, that speaks to the two reasons why I think we love to deride people who fall for scams.

The first reason is that most scams appeal to the victim's vices, and they're usually the vices that Christianity has taught us to fear the most. Lust and greed. Someone who gets burned trying to make money he doesn't deserve, or trying to get a girl he doesn't deserve--HA! Serves the bastard right.

The second reason is that we know how easy it is to fall for scams. (I learned that when I was in high school, when I lost a twenty in a game of three-card monty on the street even though I knew where the little ball was!) So we exult when someone ELSE falls for them. It's called Schadenfreude. It means we were spared, and we can persuade ourselves that we wouldn't have fallen for it because we're wiser. Usually we aren't wiser. We're luckier--or, just as often, meaner.

EVERY TIME there's a warning about this scam or that scam, someone adds the predictable and unedifying comment that anyone who falls for a scam is just a fool. Tell that to spammers and phishers and other professional frauds. They'll tell you that means the whole population is a bunch of fools.

Much the same as my own stance on it. Some scams are indeed cleverly thought out and can look like a genuine business dealing unless you have been forewarned. Victims of those sorts of things I do have sympathy for.

Things quite as obvious as this or the even more typical "I have millions of dollars to transfer, give me your bank details and help me and I will give you 10%" require absolute stupidity on the part of the victim. They couldn't be more obvious if they came with a great big neon sign stating "THIS IS A SCAM" attached to them.

I already got an e-mail from a chick who turned out to be a Russian scam ... I fell for it for about three letters from her before I discovered she wasn't real through an on-line search ... although her fourth letter would have clued me in even if I hadn't done the search, frankly.
