I think that's a technical way of saying "edible" (e.g. "esculent plants"), but I'd have to look it up. I'm not sure. Edited to add: OK, I looked up "reticent," "gafiate," and "esculent" in OED. I was right about "esculent." I have no idea what "gafiate" means, and it's not in OED. Does it mean what IceyOne said? The OED definition of "reticent" is simple: quote:
Reserved; disinclined to speak freely; given to silence or concealment. It doesn't mean "reluctant."
