ORIGINAL: candystripper Personally, while i doubt there's much harm in them, i don't care for OTC or homeopathic "meds" because they are not subjected to FDA trials or reporting requirements. We had a scare while my kid was in college because she was taking diet pills from a homeopathic store that contained epenephrine. candystripper Candy: Did you mean ephedra ? I ask because epinephrine is a prescribed medication. Ephedra has gotten a bad rap because of misuse. Ephedra has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine. The thing is.. it has been used for asthma, cough, sinusitis, nasal congestion, etc. Some where along the line it got touted as an energy-booster, weight-loss supplement, and athletic performance enhancer. IMO, this is misuse of the herb. Ephedra is a naturally occurring herb, its main active ingredient is ephedrine. Synthetic ephedrine compounds, such as pseudoephedrine, are widely used in over-the-counter cold remedies < Sudafed> and are regulated as a drug. Just as Sudafed is a great pharmacueticla for colds, it is deadly when made into crystal meth. I have been using ephedra for years and still do. The thing is to educate yourself on herbs if you are going to use them. I use the raw herb and brew it with eyebright, lungwort and nettles for head and chest colds. For me, it is better than any OTC product on the market. The problem with the preparations they were selling is the active component of ephedra varied on the part of the plant used and how the company prepared it. I am a firm believer that any drug or medicinal product can be harmful if misused. I am not insinuating that your daughter misused the product. Quite the contrary... she was misused... Some enterprising moron used a perfectly safe herbal remedy for a purpose it had never been intended for, nor is there credible documentation to support it's use for weight loss, energy boosting, etc. By doing so, the general public was put at risk and the herb got a bad rap. I use herbs fairly extensively. I would not reccomend anyone just going into a health store and buying some product for such and such a condition. For many years I went into Chinatown, in Boston and got guidance/educated by the older Chinese herbalist. Now I go to a local herb farm and get my own fresh products. And they have a wonderful reference library on site. An intersting side note, and then I will get off my band wagon. Melatonin is a very popular sleep aide. It is an OTC, product. The FDA has recently approved a drug that mimicks Melatonin, a synthetic version more simply put. It is a prescription only medicine. I would love to know what the pharmacuetical company that has the patent is charging... LOL.. * steps off her bandwagon.. and returns to the regularly scheduled program* ~mbmbn~
