I 'really' don't care overmuch........ even the best let their fingers play a little loose and fancy free on the keyboard time to time.

But if it is the plague.................. that kinda squicks me.........I spell Norwegian and German abhorrently, but they are not my native language........so those in that shape got a pass coming from me, dyslexics and the like as well...

My communication style is of no great joy to most on the board, but I try and have enough self respect to make words look kinda like they should.

E Pluribus Unum,
Ron

Amen. Not everyone is not graced with a talent for good spelling. As long as I can interpret the ''just'' of their post, that's good enough for me - I'm not that judgmental. However, I will also give kudos to those who are articulate and can state their position well.

Typos rather than spelling is a bugbare for me personally. My spelling is usually good and if needs be I can use Word to work in. I have very large hands which results in multisimiltaneous key strikes so I come back to using two fingers. Reading typos, it is easy to see the double or tripple key strikes by seeing which keys are next to the target key.. Paople also forget that more folks have dyslexia than admitt to it. I know I'm a sufferer and hense if it is gettingreally bad, I work exclusively in Word and kick the font size up to 14 pts and at times even 16 pts to find errors which the spell check doesnt.

I have to admit that bad spelling bugs me....and I certainly would not base liking or disliking someone because of it.....but would expect someone trying to "catch my eye" to spell well, even if they need a dictionary, and use reasonable grammar. A particular bugaboo is this "u r 2 kewl" shit that is all over cyberland .....again, making a mountain out of a molehill, but I guess we all have peeves.

I agree with Ron on this issue.
I am only bothered if it is habitual and one in five words is spelled correctly, that's when I want to check their green card!

Peace, Kevin

Having gone through the UK school system back in the days before dyslexia was really understood. I do make quite an allowance for spelling of others where it is quite obvious that they do make an effort (And no, spell checkers don't help when it comes to dyslexia. When you read by wordshape then a spell check can often end up with quite the wrong word in place, which is far more confusing than the word being mis-spelt).

This being an international forum I do keep an open mind to the posibility that the person maybe not have english as a first language.

What does really irritate is simple laziness. Things like TXT SPK being used where there is absolutely no excuse for it. Ur 2 LZ 2 TYP th WRD.... and such like. I don't care how nice a person I maybe overlooking, posts written like that simply get ignored and mails of the nature get deleted. Folks want to communicate with me then they can put in at least some effort to do so in english.

Spelling and typos stick out like a sore thumb to me. I have done enough editing that it has become habit no matter what i am reading. The real kicker is my own spelling is horrid. I try to remain patient but must admit, if i find a post, email or profile that is full of them, i soon have to skip it.

I can not help but go back and edit my post if i spot a typo or spelling error after it has posted. I have tried to say "screw it" and move on...just can't do it. :)

edited to add...and your post subject line is like fingernails on a chalkboard MH...LOL

It depends a lot on where a mis-spelling is found. For instance, I don't mind spelling errors while in chat, in forums or e-mail. When I am researching a medical topic for a patient or client, however, I tend to start tuning out of incorrectly spelled writing almost immediately. If one is going to publish a learned treatise, then it needs to be checked for spelling, proof-read, and probably reviewed before it gets printed and distributed.

On the other hand, in this kind of medium, it is more the idea that needs to be conveyed over the need for exactly the correct spelling and grammar. Besides, sometimes we have very good thoughts expressed by people who do not use English as their main language, and may have a completely different alphabet. Just because someone is not a native of this country and does not use the language with expert facility does not mean they have invalid thoughts, or are in any way mentally below those of us who have proper 'Merican fetchins up."

I do not like it when someone writes a message to Me and it is filled with spelling errors, as I find it very hard to read, but I hate it even more when people who shall remain nameless exaggerate it in an attempt to be funny. That is just childish and dumb, which it will be doubtful if they can refrain from responding to this in the same childish manner.
