i've never cooked, eaten, nor been offered black eyes peas. It's never been any part of the New Year's traditions here.

A few New Year's traditions i've participated in:

1) Placing coins anywhere outdoors prior to New Year's Day. Some believe that once the coins are gathered afterwards & then spent, better luck regarding financial status will occur.
2) Opening both the front & back doors of the home just prior to the clock striking midnight on New Year's Eve. It is believed that in doing so, any good luck of the New Year will enter the front door while any bad luck or misfortunes of the past year will exit as it is pushed out the back door by the incoming New Year.
3) Taking note of who the first adult man is who enters the home after the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve. Some believe that the status of that man's wealth, and health will dictate what the New Year will bring their way.

i participated in the placing of coins outdoors this New Year. i can't recall exactly where in the yard i had put my change. i think it was accidentally kicked off the front step and into the snow or shrubs. Am waiting for the great thaw to take place so i can find it, or for someone else to climb under the shubs in search.

Although she has spent most of her life in Flint Michigan, a friend, whom is currently staying in one of my downstairs bedrooms with her man, has Southern roots through her father. For New Year's Day she prepared a delicious dinner which included black eyed beans, a favorite of mine since childhood. She told me it's a Southern family tradition which is supposed to bring good luck for the new year.

An interesting sidenote, studies prove that those whom are considered the "luckiest" are also the most optimistic of people. That coincides with my belief that if you believe in something, you can more often than not make it happen.
