I just had to share this--from an email entitled "a good wife 1955"--were all wives subs then? LOL[;)]

Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have be thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they get home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.

Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.

Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Run a dustcloth over the tables.

During the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering to his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet.

Be happy to see him.

Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.

Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

Don't greet him with complaints and problems.

Don't complain if he's late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through at work.

Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or lie him down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.

Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

A good wife always knows her place.

Actually they were. Thats how the country was before feminism.

We should go back to that attitude. I know I can do many things
better than men can. Although the women back then could to.

If this is what was considered a good wife, I would have been divorced on day two.

That is a fairly famous (or infamous, depending on how you look at it) article that was published in a magazine called "Housekeeping Monthly" in may of '55. It makes the rounds every once in a while.

i remember reading that in one of my women's studies courses in college, and thinking "geez, that's old fashioned!"

Who would've EVER thought that i, of all people, am actually a submissive and would consider that part of my training!

Ah now, that certainly would pep him up. Murmurs soothingly, hoping this topic of conversation is of interest to him: 'Dull day at the office dear? Then meet my friend Barbie, she likes you too. Would you like us before or after dinner, in front of the fire? What dear? Both of us on top of the washing machine? But I switched it off especially for you!'

Mind you, reading it all in a more sombre frame of mind, can you imagine how trapped in their roles people, husbands and wives both, must have felt if they didn't reconcile themselves to this, or actively choose them? I'm off to count my blessings - having choices - and give thanks to the feminists for their part in the changes. nadine.

Actually that is the way my Dom and I live our life. Of course day to day turmoils and tribulations do also come into play.

Not everything on the list is as well defined. Although he is the man of the house. He wears the pants. I take care of everything inside. He takes care of the outside. He does help me when I need help just as I help him.
In the 5 years we have been toghether so far I think he has made me a corn dog once.
The only thing I do not do is prepare myself for him. He does'nt require anything so he gets whatever shape I may be in at the moment.

I'm all for womens lib to. Just only in the workplace. I happen to like being able to make more money than he does. It gives me a sort of power if I ever needed it.
Yet at home I prefer my man to be the man.

I realize my opinions are not others.

On the other side though, this supports my notion that the term "wife" should be gender neutral. I look forward to becoming a wife, with all of its responsibilities and roles that are required.

MistressDREAD -> RE: 1955 a good wife (5/3/2004 12:14:52 PM)

actually this had nothing to do with feminizumsssss
this was concidered the *christian way a good
US christian was to live in the christian family
structure. Still is I might add..AND there is nothing
WRONG with this type of choice. Its the world thats
a changein not the way things are done in the church
according to the Popes most recent speach ~smiles~

feminizumsssss came with the right to vote and have
equal say longggggggg befor equal rights on other
forums and it was actually intellectual rights that came
with the first amendment that Woman fought for to gain
when the right was not allowed to them as Men, then came
the privacy rights longgg befor the vote right ect ect ect.
