Some people decided not to pay attention in English after the 3rd grade. After all, we're all to busy listening to and learning Spanish here in the USA.

roflmao........ ain't that the truth!

Okay - now class - all together now - Dominant - adjective or noun? Ahem, i'd say both as in "that Dominant has quite a dominant personality". Submissive - adjective or noun? "my submissive nature presents me as a submissive".

However, being submissive - i would certainly submissively bow to Your dominant opinion Goddess Dusty. (busily checks profile - ah not in Washington) - okay i can be a smart ass. LOL

I've never heard anyone say "I am a Dominate" The confusions between Dominate and Dominant are normally typos where the person just doesn't cacth what they did. After all, each begins with D O M I N A before you put your ending with the A T E or A N T. In our minds, we normally think the right thing but our fingers will not get the message. How often will some of us read Dominant before going back and acturally seeing the word Dominate?

Yes, it is all of the above, mispelling, misunderstanding, misappropriating the emphasis on whether it is to be used as verb or a noun?

Kinda like someone saying "urinate", to which I may reply "No, I'm a ten and you are an eight."

Comprende?

It also is that most people don't "study" English if it is their milk language.

Milk language.....I've never heard that term, yet how descriptive it is! I like it, thank you!!

Roel, when English is your native language, Dutch grammar and sentence structure is really wacked out!

Yeah, Dutch is a difficult language to learn. Even when it's your native language...

*Admits to always seeing it*
I was once told that I could never be a true speed reader. I do read very fast, but My mind will not allow Me to ignore grammatical errors. I have stopped (for just a moment) to re-read sentence structure in a published novel.
*Shrugs* Just Me! Instantly saw the bolded typo too! *S*

Oh, you're not alone. I've had to give up on a novel more than once just because of a quirky writing style. It may have been intentional on the writer's part, but my inner editor just can't get over the need to stop, re-read, and correct the structure. LOL

I would buy your typo theory if it didn't happen so widely throughout the profiles that are up and the forum posts as well. It is very clear that some people are using the wrong word for what they are trying to describe.

Ok Gauge, how about this idea. Instead of verb or noun, it might be a simple spelling error. As one is typing the word Dominant, they think Dominate is the actual spelling. They never realized that they are two different words. As said before, I have never heard someone say "I am a Dominate" but have it in writting because of a spelling confusion rather than having a slight case of dyslexia. People are use to writting or saying "I want to Dominate you" more often than "I am a dominant kind of person" Dominate is used so much more that people forget about the word dominant.

The easy way out from fucking up is to go with Dom. "I am a Dom" stops the whole dominate and dominant error from occuring as long as you don't write or say to someone "I want to dominant you." If that happens, then one is beyond my help.

The OP was asking what the difference was and it has been answered. I can't answer why it happens all I know that in a text driven world like this, in order to be clear the proper words should be used. Not everyone gets it right, but some consistantly get it wrong even after it is pointed out.

Not the same I know, but this does raise the subject of spelling too. I regluarly get questioned in messanger about my spellong E.G. Colour against Color. As I point out I was taught the Queens English using the Oxford Grammar and Dictionary. I set my spell check to Australian English due to Aussie slang but am switching to NZ English which maintains the Oxfoird Spelling. Even grammar has changed, something which I will not agree to and right or wrong I maintain the Traditional forms (for traditions sake)....

IB, in your part of the world some things are spelled differently. Most people should understand that. For you the spelling is correct and accurate. It is not based on ignorance of proper spelling or usage. While I am bright enough to realize what people mean when they misuse words I guess I find it a little shocking that it is so common. I am not a grammar Nazi nor am I perfect when I write either and therefore I don't judge others harshly.

It would only take for him to say "get on your knees Bitch, for I am DOMINATE!" before I erupted in manic laughter. Then I would be in for it
