Domming by committee?

"Men caught boozing by their wives in an Indian village now face being slapped across the face by their wives' slippers. A committee of women at Japalli, in Andhra Pradesh, introduced the punishment..."

That'll be great until the mens' committee makes slippers illegal.

while i disagree with abolition i ponder....how would domestic violence be affected by this? studies have proven that domestic violence suicides homocides etc rise when people are under the influence of alcohol and other mind altering substances. by humiliating the men with this idea (though one drink should not mean such stiff penalty) think of how many marriages families and communities can be spared a much larger pain....i would like to see such a thing here in the states perhaps not so very strict but similar to the dui lawsand modified somehow to prevent violence but still enable others to imbibe within reason. this is just a thought and instant reaction to what i read but the idea somehow has a bit of merit...

Unfortunately that is such a relative term it is hard to know what is "within reason". I find the article amusing though, and it is surprising to see such power given in a nation to women, where women have been considered of less status than their men even in modern days.

an indian friend of mine told me they have a common occurance over there called "house fires" where wives sometimes tend to disappear.

yes house fired are commen, but they tend to be the result of a mother in law not happy with her daughter in law. I have been told time and time again by indian freinds of mine that the family structure is very much a matriachry.

In this country, the only way this could be implemented and save the wife from a visit to the local jail would be to have the men slap themselves with their wive's slippers....and even then, someone would find a way to blame the wife...wasn't it her fault in the first place that he was drinking?
