A rule of thumb I always use: The less hair you grab, the more it hurts. The distance from the scalp also makes some difference.

A full handful of hair, right at the scalp is useful for directing the head without causing much pain. Grab a single whisp and pull, however, and you'll immediately get the slave's complete attention.

Catch the hair at the back of the neck, slacken, roll it once around your clenched fist. Pull or yank with desired force.

I prefer long hair.

Adding- it can feel very good on men, women, doms, subs- causing yummy chemicals to be released. Being able to do good scalp massages is a great service.

I have never had that done

I have been tied to a post by my hair only though. Does that count?

You can pull hair that is very very short surprisingly effectivly.

I love having my hair pulled.. although I don't like washing it the next day and realizing I could provide a bald barbie doll with a head full of hair. It's gross.

lmao... finally made it past 12th birthday did you?... grew a few extra long hairs that don't stay in the BVDs?...

As for the OP... I lost my hair in a fire back in the mid 80's.. it was down to the back of my knees then. I had managed to get it to grow back to to having problems sitting on it when I sat down. Back in 2001 I had to go thru chemo.. and cried watching it all fall out.. so I cut it real short then.

So far it's back to my shoulders again... and getting thicker again. I love having my hair brushed... to me that's some of the best fore play... after the tender brushing... fingers combing through.... the gripping.. the slight tug.. or hard pull.. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

I have done the close to the scalp handful, or as amayos said wrap a longer section around my fist (still end up close to the skull). Its very effective for contralling the head and putting the face where you want it. I have heard (not just here) that pulling on a great bunch of it close to the scalp has an endorphin like effect. I know that the last 'nilla woman I dated gasped when I took her hair like this to kiss her (said she hadn't believed just a kiss could be so hot).

Women I have talked to that have hair pulling as a limit, are usually those that look at it likeit occurs in a catfight (small bunches grabbed at the free end with the intention of hurting or even being pulled out). Even explaining the difference, most aren't interested. Oh well...

Oh and when my own hair was longer, I definately enjoyed getting it pulled.
