I just want clarity for something that I see is very common yet seems so off to me. So many poeple here use the term and it confuses me... I'll happily wear a dunce hat if someone will take the time to explain why I'm wearing it- lol

As long as I've been a submissive.. and too have heard these same words being used.. i've often wondered why they were used.. and how others defined the words in themselves. Because in the... how do I put this... real world.. (off line in other words).. I don't hear these words.. even when visiting with others at a munch meeting... dungeons.. etc... I only see them in forums.. on line in chat (on that rare occasion I venture into chat)

So yeah... i'm just as curious as to how they come about and what others feelings... meanings.. thoughts.. opinions.. of these words mean.

OK now that I can understand... it's a convenient way to explain something. Verbal shorthand as you put it. Thank you :) I thought it had some deeper meaning and the context of it bothered me... This is much more clear. I'll never use this term but hey... that's me.

Ahhhhhh but setting the table is not the same as setting the scene for some event is it. If you set the table and include a vase of red roses and several red cancles, then set the ambient lighting to a romantic level then set the selected roimantic or seductive music polaying, you have "set the scene" for either a romantic candle-lit dinner with some one special or a good nosh followed by a bonk fest (which ever is appropriate). It either case the scene was set awaiting for the actors to arive and live their lives (for the moment) on the stage you have created. It is all real or should be in the minds of those involved

It's all in the game and how you play it.............

Ok I'm not trying to be bratty and "mouthy" here ok?

If I set the table for a romantic dinner, or set the scene as you put it, I'm still going to have dinner. I'm going to eat and hopefully the ambiance will provide a mood for me to relax in. Am I an actor on a stage though? Goodness, I hope not.

As the Bard said, we are all actors on the stage of life.............. Why do you think I have used as a tag line part of the intro song used by Tripple H (WWE) aka The Game....

Once you recognise life is a game, you can then learn the rule which can not be altered (well they can but it means challanging God in what ever form you see him. Yes you can win but only something like .000001% are sucessfull) and the "Rules" which you can manipulated to live life on your terms

It's all in the game and how you play it.............

I'm not acting, neither is he, so why the implication? I don't need a director, nor is it going to "end" like a typical "scene" would. ok here I go dating Myself--the term scene started in the 50's with the advent of beatniks---if you were "cool man" you were in the scene or part of the scene---you wore the clothes, frequented the places and acted the part--so to be part of the scene meant you were cool---it carried over to the hippie generation as well--in BDSM, scene originally referred to those events that were staged or planned where one had participants and observers---the participants were "in the scene or scening"--I use the term scene to refer to public or private play with no sex or intimate contact---when I am with the boy, whether I plan it or not, W/we play--

as for planning, I may grab something and begin or I may plan it--planning and making him prepare and think about it feeds My sadism---<smiles>

I can totally understand "being part of the scene". It carried over into the Punk generation too and I'm sure plenty of others. And maybe it makes some sense that it would be used to describe some get-togethers but still.... it just seems so forged... thanx for elaborating :)

I don't think that those who use the term are using it in a way to make it seem forged or staged...I just think it's one of those words that has carried over through generations and it's easier to use than to think up a new one for lol.

edited to add:

Kind of like a generalized term that no one really thinks about when they use.

i'm right there with both of you, HisGirl and true. Maybe it's a sign of my Master's teachings (ya think?) but i never understood "scene" or "play" either. Master uses me when he feels like it. Sometimes he plays with me (or my body parts) for amusement, sometimes he uses me for his pleasure, and sometimes he puts me through the gammot to train me on something or push me further into my submission. i recall him talking to a girlfriend of mine once, and she was telling him about a scene she was in. He said "oh so you roleplay then?" As you might imagine, she didn't like that very much. But i ended up picking up on that.

As for staging and planning things out...i never know what the heck is up his sleeve (lol). He usually has a pretty good idea of what he wants to do with me and fills in the gaps however he feels like, or with what he thinks is best it at the time. Much of that depends on how i respond.

Thanks for asking the question! i thought i was on an island with that concept.

great question! personally, i don't scene... but then i don't call this a 'lifestyle' either. Nor do i play... (in that sense of the word).

It's nice to know i'm not alone in how i feel. It is why i don't go to dungeons, this isn't a game to me... never has been, never will be. And before i'm flamed, broiled, charred and set to dry (lol)... it is only my opinion and i am not judging other's way of thinking.

I like the term play because it fills me with child-like enthusiasm. It's not an obligation like work, it's adult's play in my eyes.

I work with kids, and contrary to what some people assume, play is serious business. It's all about learning, growth, fun and bonding with others...and no matter who is involved when I play, it's all about that for me too.

Play is usually defined as something that is inner-motivated and voluntary. Work is about responsibility, obligation, and usually implies some compensation (monetary or otherwise). Play is it's own reward.

yeah, imagine how annoying it would be to be in a "scene" and here "ACTION" or "CUT" not to mention some "director" spouting orders on how to do this or how to do that, adjusting the lighting, arrainging the "props" or whatnot...

or, how about hearing: "MORE PASSION", or someone explaining what your "motivation" should be.

then there's the ever popular "ROLL'EM"

Hmmm...I learned these terms at munches and play parties here. All of my experience is real world and that's personally where I picked up the shorthand.

At first to understand you have to stop thinking in terms of 'master/slave 24/7 stuff' and view 'scene' as strictly an SM or Bondage or Discipline or Role Play or Fetish context...where two or more people agree on doing a,b and c together for a set period of time. When or where the word originally eventuated and came to be used by practicioners of the above I have no idea, so sorry I have no history lesson to shed light on its humble beginnings. Thus you could say 'we did an SM scene last night' or 'I love nothing more in a scene than being tied down and spanked'.

'Scene', as in 'into the scene' (as others have noted) is just one of those all encompassing phrases to describe partaking of a particular subculture, in this context, the 'BDSM scene' or the Bondage or Discipline or SM or Fetish or D/s 'scene' if only one subculture is of primary interest.

Yes, there are times when he chooses to amuse himself by playing with my body (or with my mind for that matter). Those are specific individual incidents, not to be confused with calling every time he uses me "play." i do not play with Master; i serve him and he uses me. Sometimes in the course of using me, he chooses to play with me or toy with me.

i hope that clears it up.
