Personally, I think to put a label on oneself without another to help you define it, is too limiting. You might start out with someone and say 'hey, I am a submissive" only to find out into the relationship that you are really a slave...or vice versa. I just think that trying to label yourself at this time is wrong. Only you and your partner...and the particular dynamic between the two of you...can decide who you are.

I totally disagree with this, no slavery contract would be binding in the U.S. Anyone can walk away.

I also disagree with those who say a slave has no choices or no limits. All activity should be consensual. JMHO

i asked the question only to get the different views. i know who i am inside and personally for me i do not need another to validate or invalidate that. i just truly enjoy getting the different opinions about this life. (Notice i did not say 'lifestyle'?) grins... i am me, as me, born the way i am, i had no choice in the matter from the moment i breathed my first breath of air.

p.s. i posed the question here because i am never sure where the appropriate place is to post questions.

While there is no way to have a legally binding slave contract, there are ways to make certain aspects legal. In particular, Power of Attorney for Finances. A Power of Attorney enables someone to make financial decisions on anything a person owns. It is a legally binding document.

My opionion only...A state of mind must exist to be considered one or the other.While many of the actions or hoops you go through with a dom may seem to present both titles as the same in meaning .The fact is , as stated early, a submissive is given the ability to include choice in their play . As with a slave , you are suppose to have given up free will and abide by another to decide a future for you . So often , even Masters/Mistresses will not clearly define what they seek. I would ask you . as mentioned earlier , review who you are inside ad what you seek in life.

This is such dangerous territory. One person will give you explanation A, next B and then person C will start taring the two apart.

Frankly, slave/sub discussions are really just about power politics. It's a way for one group to feel superior over another. Lincoln freed the slaves. Anything we do in the name of slavery here in this big wide world is non-binding and is meant to enhance a relationship. But there has to be a foundation of a relationship there.

If someone calling themselves a Master or a Mistress tells me they are only interested in 'slaves' what that says to me is they are only interested in a 'role' and not a whole person first.

I identify myself as a submissive. Sir wishes for me to become his slave. He is in the process of training me to be that. What he wants and what the next Dom wants may be completely differant, but they may both be looking for a 'slave'.

So, my opinion, for what ever it's worth is that you can ask 10 differant people to define sub and slave and get 12 differant answers.

Basically, if you are happy with the other person, what you call them really doesn't mean a hill of beans.

To me, submissive is an adjective describing a personality trait. One can be a submissive male or female and not be into BDSM at all.

Slave is a noun describing a person rather than a personality trait.

one believes that a slave is trained. one believes that the only choice a slave gets to make once they are Owned is to stay or leave. one believes a slave can make the choice to leave if the Master does something to lose the trust and respect - such as lying.

one does not believe that a slave has to have a submissive personality - but that they choose to submit their will to the one they choose to serve - the one that becomes their Master.

one does not believe a slave has to be Owned to be a slave. A slave is trained, a slave knows who and what she is - and that does not go away if one is not Owned. A teacher is still a teacher when on summer vacation or sabbatical; a nurse is still a nurse whether working or not (now she may not be a practicing nurse, and would need a refresher class to renew license - but she is still a nurse). The knowledge, the experience, do not go away.

Everyone has their own ideas, their own definitions - so some may agree, some may not - smiles, but ya can't please all of the people all of the time, right? lol
