I used to work at a university, and the professors there spent a fair amount of time around term papers being due searching the web for term-papers-for-sale to keep an eye on the plagarism issue. They would also regularly check up on cited resources on papers turned in. I remember one instance in particular - the professor was reading a book review and it seemed familiar - sure enough, the student had cut and pasted a review for the book off amazon.

More recently, in a class I had last fall, the professor took the time to check each and every journal article on papers turned in for the class.

My point is that in order to catch it, you have to spend a fair amount of time being vigilant, so it really depends on how important potentially catching it is to you.

A friend of mine in Canada {very adept at spotting plagiarism} claims in many instances the professors are often worse than the students - I really believe her ; }

But of course. There are some wonderful professors out there, but some of the stories I could tell you? You have to wonder what planet these people are from.

I regularly do web search for particular phrases that seem to be unique to my books to find people who have stolen parts. Then ask them to delete the offending sections. Those who aren't are referred to my lawyer. His fee takes a serious bite out of the judgements but so far we haven't lost one and most website owners cave and pay up once they consult a lawyer themselves.

I also occasionally share some of my unpublished work on a promise not to share it but also each one has a "ringer" inserted, a different one for each loan so if I find them on the web I also know who is the lying bastard.

I missed this the first time around, so I am grateful that it has been refreshed.
I have been told in the past that someone else is using My name, and/or photos, and/or words. The first two is the situation that didn;t jsut make Me mad, it made Me panic! I am not sure I even would worry so much about someone else plagarizing words, because I can always go back, if it comes to My attention, and take care of it. It did bother Me when I was told (in error) that someone knew Me and had spoken with me before. Supposedly recognized the photos, and was busy telling me all about Myself. None of it was even remotely correct, so I immediately asked Who What When Where Why...and did determine that he was mistaken. However, I am aware that My photos have been misused on more than one occasion.
Now here's a different kind of identity theft. My name. Yes, it is a pseudonym for use on the internet, but it is still My name and I have not changed anything about it from the very beginning (more years than I care to say). I had a boy who was found to be using My name in chat, and offering fake appointments to meet with Me (if a money order came in the mail to him as My secretary slave. A local boy found out and called Me to let Me know. That was more scary and took more effort to clean up than the theft of My words. My reputation is more important. I am not making light of plagarism, but just thought I would take this opportunity to remind all that, especially in this day and age, it is quite easy to steal way more than words.

I just googled the first two lines of your profile, and got two results. Both were to your personal.
