MissA -> Did anyone see the Montel Williams show today? (12/16/2005 7:47:20 PM)

It was all about polyamory and I must say it was very informative for someone like myself who isn't poly and doesn't really know much about it. Of course it didn't address the BDSM aspects but all in all I felt it shed a more positive light on a generally "taboo" subject than talk shows usually tend to do and the couples/trios etc... were well prepared to discuss their lives.

The majority of the poly folk I know of aren't into kink, so I'm not surprised that BDSM didn't come up. They are, after all, two totally different forms of alternative living, though some people do incorporate both.

I am interested in catching a replay of it. I'm curious to see what was addressed. Thanks for the heads up.

There was a guy who discussed having 7 wives, and since that's illegal in most places he was put in jail after he brought attention to his lifestyle.

ya have to be carefull taking your life on public tv lol

I believe I saw the episode you (MissA) are referring to.

I'm happy that the poly lifestyle got a bit of air time without looking like some sort of circus (Jerry anyone?) and I'm happy that Montel seemed to do his level best to be neutral and understanding. I'm quite sick of seeing alternative lifestyles portrayed as freak shows, wherein the only participants of such lifestyles are trailer trash bumpkins. It's a positively ridiculous assumption.

I do hope that this particular type of living has more time on daytime T.V. (provided it isn't on a show where chairs are thrown and every other word spoken is a curse).

I had, of course, my own two cents for each question asked - and felt that I could have better answered some of them than the participating poly guests - but they maintained their calm, never flew into a rage and confidently explained what poly living meant for each of them.

I'm quite pleased to have heard from a daughter living in a poly household as well. I'm glad that those in the audience were able to hear that the lifestyle enriched her childhood. I think it was important for them to see a smiling, well-adjusted, happy unmentionable.

Didn't see the actual episode, but read a transcript. There is supposedly a bittorrent of the episode out there someplace, but I had no luck with that.

From reading it, it did look like polyamory was given a fair shake, and differentiated from swinging (thank god!).

Actually, I'm glad bdsm wasn't mentioned or covered *on this particular episode*. Since not all poly relationships have bdsm elements to them, I think that would have risked confusing the already misinformed public even further.

I thought the program was okay, but not representative of my exposure to poly.

Rather than a committed communal house (sometimes houses), theirs seemed to be a loose network of a girlfriend here, a bride there, and someone else's boyfriend elsewhere.

Yes, I know many people have loose networks like that, but it seemed like 'poly lite' to me. I mean, when I've not been committed, I've had a girl in this city, that one, and so on, but I never considered it polyam, just a girl in every port, so to speak.

Trailer trash bumpkin... You?

Mmmhmm... And I'm His Holiness the late J.C.

I took a peek at your profile.
You can spell. You're coherent. You use punctuation - and not in places it shouldn't be.

Spin us another yarn... *Grin*
