FangsNFeet said something that has made me wish to post something here... that other wise I would not have. I, like many of you, come from a military family, but unlike too many, I actually listen to what my brother has to say. He is a Navy Nuk... for those of you who don't know.. that means he works with nuclear power. He wrote an article for the local newspaper here... I'd like to share that with you now.


Every day we pray for peace, prepare for war

Nobody likes war. Nobody is pro-war. As a military man, I know the promises of peace and the devastations of war. I have never seen hand to hand combat, but I have brothers-in-arms who have, as well as those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The United States of America is a proud nation, and one of the few that still believe in an entirely volunteer military. Every one of us saw that it is the human responsibility to defend freedom. I once heard a friend of mine, who is currently in Iraq, reply to a comment about the war. The comment was about the protesting against the war and the politics surronding it. He only reply was, "that is their right as Americans and it is my job to protect those rights with my life." Now he made that comment out on the town one night so he wasn't saying it because someone prompted him top, he truly believes it in his heart, as we all do.

To a soldier, a sailor, an airman, or a Marine there is only one job, to protect the freedom of the human race. Whether it is from a crazed leader with weapons of mass destruction or a tyrannical dictator abusing the people he should be leading. I believe I speak for all of us, and I hope the 116th will agree with me when I say that. Every day we pray for peace, and every day we prepare for war, only for the people we have sworn our very lives to protect, each and every one.




So that folks speaks volumes to me. I used to get very angry with people who would spout off acting like they knew what was going on. But the last time my brother was home we had a great heart to heart... he told me that it shouldn't matter to me... that America is what it is BECAUSE of people who have that freedom... that they had no less rights then anyone else. He said... "we have the right, and the freedom, to speak whatever rests on our hearts, be grateful that we do and bless the almighty there are men to fight for that." So I do... I thank god for each and everyone of you who have the right to say whatever lays heavy on your hearts, and for the freedom to speak freely of it.

Yup! I made a typo. I meant to type "cheek" It happens from time to time. Most of our CM members have half a brain to know what everyone meant to type when minor spellings and typos occur so I'm not going to waste time editing them. Our gramer/spelling nazis are just going to have to SUCK IT UP.

Glad I could be inspirational. Your post was a well written and most needed for some to read. For Christmas, I'd like very much to see your post in the New York Times, Time Magazine, and News Week. It would be most needed there than just here on a kink website for a few to read. Anyhow, I'm glad you wrote what you've written. It reflects most of what I think as well.

Yeah Halliburton and friends are making billions overcharging the US taxpayers for fixing a lot of wires and pipes, but the wires and pipes all pre-dated this party. Something needed to be done, yes. An almost unimaginably bad course was selected to do it.

If you think that you've accurately characterized the situation then you should complain about more than your news sources, sparky. Your history book publishers got it all wrong too. And whoever taught Critical Thinking at your school had a hell of a sense of humor.

Um. I wasnt so much pointing out the typo as the irony of the typo.
What did I do with that half a brain I had, anyway? Im sure it was here when I went to bed last night.

A a former Marine, and a combat veteran, I feel obligated to point out that only part of that statment you quote that actually came out of Sen. Glenn's mouth is the part that begins:

The fact is, that like most of the combat veterans I know, Sen. Glenn has 'grave misgivings' about our presence in Iraq.

For an actual quote from a former Marine combat veteran on war, consider the words of Smedley Butler, Major General of the USMC (Retired), and holder of two Congressional Medals of Honor:

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

For a great many years, as a soldier, I had a suspicion that war was a racket; not until I retired to civil life did I fully realize it. Now that I see the international war clouds gathering, as they are today, I must face it and speak out.



And today we must consider- Ireland had as much involvement with the events of Sept 11, 2001 as Iraq did- and not one senator, not one member of congress has a family member serving in Iraq. 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi Nationals, but the only non-military flights in the air the following day were the private planes of the Saudi Oil families (including Bin Laudin's relatives)- by direct order of our oil family president. It's not about nations, or about terrorism, or politics.

It's about the money.

With all due respect to your brother for a truly lovely piece of rhetoric, he is saying only that he and his fellow soldiers, sailors, airmen or Marines are doing what they believe is noble. I commend him and them for being true to their ideal, but there's no guarantee that it's not misplaced. Hitler was an idealist doing what he believed was noble too.

In this case, through no fault of their own, their fight is noble but the cause is wrong. This war that our troops and the American people have been sold has nothing to do with preserving freedom for the human race. Meanwhile it's squandering the resources that could actually be used to increase freedom for oppressed peoples in other countries and our own. Kudos to Topcat, the former Marine, for calling a spade a spade.

Another way to look at it is that news is about the unusual. Look at it this way, would you like a world where the headline was "Woman survives trip to supermarket" or "Honest politician uncovered."

so my dad came home in a box to keep us all from speaking dialects of northern vietnamese, and since we pulled out of that one how come we're not? did we all turn into communists? who paid for that little conflict? running drugs didn't pay for much beyond a few guns and ammo.

how about afghanistan? will we speak pushtu or persian if we leave without conquering them? who is paying for this war?

will we all be speaking arabic if we pull out of iraq? who's paying for this conflict?

i don't mean bodies (and i already paid), i mean funds. take a look at the national debt and think about where the money is coming from. informed consent. sobering thoughts.

In belated reply to the OP, I just want to say I am disgusted with the media for being way too kind to Bush in regards to his war. It seems to me they are cutting the administration a lot of slack, and if the coverage looks negative it's because things really aren't going too well over there. I think if the mass media coverage were more balanced, we'd be seeing an even darker picture.
