The original poster referenced Shel Silverstein. He was one of the original members of Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show (before they abbreviated to Dr. Hook).

I've got the mp3, too. Actually, I used to have in on vinyl (the album). Like I said, it's a bazillion years old. I believe the first time "Freaker's Ball" appeared on one of their albums was in 1972, the album was called "Sloppy Seconds."

The were a very prolific band, but didn't gain as much notoriety in the U.S. as they did in Europe. They'd had a lot of ablums without much recognition (some of them were quite good) until they did a song called "Cover of the Rolling Stone" and then they actually made the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine.

They had some hilarious tunes:

Penicillin Penny
Gettin' My Rocks Off
If I'd Only Come and Gone
Looking for Pussy
Roland the Roadie and Gertrude the Groupie

Queen of the Silver Dollar & Carry Me Cary were songs I liked a lot, but they weren't funny.

It was considered rock at the time, although many thought of it as either Folk/Rock or Pop/Rock. They were certainly hard to pigeon hole. My understanding is that some of the former members still tour, predominantly in Europe.

Eighties punk rock/new wave was full of BDSM connotations. I know several songs off the top of my head 'Obsession' by Animotion. 'Chains of Love' by Fleetwood Mac, 'Tainted Love' by Soft Cell. My favorite band, Aerosmith, is well known for sexual connotations and BDSM lyrics in their songs. 'Falling in Love is so hard on the knees'...and in 'Back in the Saddle Again' Steven Tyler croons "Two bits gets you time in the racks, I scream for more'. 'Dude looks like a Lady' I believe references transvestism. 'Pink' talks about laying on pink sheets and says 'It's kink, but you don't ever tell her'.

I had recorded "I'm Your Man" but decided not to keep it in favor of "The Sadomasochism Blues," not that I thought the latter to be a better song, just more accessible.
