i haven't read the book but in the end of the movie i saw she wasn't excused from service at all but her and her Master were in love and she continued as His slave. It was significant to me when she branded Him because although she is His willing slave it also shows that in a sense Masters can also be enslaved at times by their own emotions.

You both are correct. The movie's end was quite different from the book.

I "forced" myself to read the book, only because I had promised a dominant friend of mine I'd tell him what I thought of it. What I thought was that it was such poorly written trash that I wanted to burn it after the first half dozen pages. The characters were boring, and O was an insipid twit who only did what she did out of desperation to hold onto a man who was far more submissive than she was. The book actually made me angry, and the more I read, the angrier I got. "Slaves" (I call them victims) were obtained via lies and deceit, and that's not what MY lifestyle is all about.

Since I'm not a masochist, I opted not to torture myself with the film after that.

i would wholeheartedly agree with you on this, at least in the beginning. However, i think that through her journey she became a much stronger woman...at least from the movie angle.

Perhaps in their day the Marquis de Sade books were zippy, but saying the man needed an editor from today's perpeective is perhaps being generous of me :)

I couldn't get through more than 20 pages of it - it's a good alternate to sleeping pills tho' if anyone is an insomniac I'd highly recommend them. I just happen to have a copy of a few of his works available for sale ;-) lol.

I started the story of O when I was just getting into BDSM and haven't revisited it.
I enjoyed much of what I did read, but I was not yet prepared at the time to go further than I did into it...hmmm I think I'd enjoy it now.

I saw the movie when it was first released here in Brisbane the night before the censors shut it down. It depends on what you wanted it from it. If you're looking for technical excellence, it certainly isn't in that league.

"O" was, (and still is for that matter) about the concept of D/s IMHO. I know it sure struck a chord with me. I vividly remember walking out of that cinema thinking I now knew who I was.

Recently, there was a documentary shown about the author (or should that be authoress? Political correctness and all that) that I thoroughly enjoyed. I found it incredible that she wrote it longhand with no revisions or corrections at all before they printed what many consider to be the definitive "textbook" on D/s.

De Sade is a lot like reading a check list of "obscenities" interspersed with philosophical paragraphs that are few and very far between.

But the dichotony between Justine and Juliette in his two major works could be understood as a commentary on human beings relationships to their society. de Boyer offers a third option for said relationship.

Although I haven't read the book for a number of years, I'm thinking now I should go re-read it...

What I recall was O's need to please... I was able to relate to O's desire to make everyone around her happy... Short of that, I actually recall surprising little else.

I didn't even know there was a movie... So I can't comment on that.

I do know the so called sequel book (Return to the Chateau, I believe) doesn't score high on my list of reviews...

Like others, I read the book, didn't see the movie. I liked the book a lot, it really appealed to my fantasies (although it also gave me a total complex for awhile). I was never really sure why others didn't like it. I guess it's all the abuse? Mmm, abuse.

I've never seen the movie. While I own the book, it's still not one of my favorite pieces of reading material. It provides food for thought, but I find it too abrupt and lacking in character development. Ah, just my opinion, though.

Go into a local bookshop or music store and any good one will order it for you. Otherwise try online and just Type the name in the search box. I did already and there are lots on offer from Book to DVD to Film - to audio tape!

I've never seen any movie but managed to read about 30 odd pages of the book before recycling it. No thankyou - I thought it was crap!

thing is if they did it to day it would turn into a horror flick i found just from the first to minutes several things i dis agree with one a sub chooses who they serve 2nd is they have no respect for they're "slaves" feelings and treat them more like toys i bet they would have more respect for there house hold dog then a sub

all in all i found it was far to un reasl to bother wathcing

Why did it freak you because they wanted to make her cry? Someone crying is another aspect, another dimension. And. less I not be making myself clear, The Story of O is classic for a reason.

If you'd like to watch another film concerning BDSM and D/s, I recommend The Image (French, 1976), originally titled The Ounishment of Ann. Really quite good.

Personally, I'd recommend literature and books before movies but that's my personal bias. I find that when you can take things at your own pace you can understand and process new ideas and new activities more objectively that if you hit in the fast paced world of movies.

I would also look up reviews and descriptions of books before investing in them so you know what you might be getting into. The "classics" are something "classics" because of their rarity, they uniqueness, some reviews, or because they are actually well written. The term "classic" doesn't necessarily imply high quality and certainly not something that wil appeal to everyone.
