I started out with chat rooms and quickly learned they are filled with either casual folks who like the association of being in a D/s or BDSM room but really spend most of their time talking fluff. The rest are the "instant gratification" types. Yes, there are a few "regulars" and they spend their time talking to others like themselves (sort of cyber cliques).

Also, people who have something thoughtful to say, usually need some time to compose their thoughts and chat rooms don't serve this very well; hence, all the small talk. I have an AOL membership but I keep it only because AOL has the largest file transfer size (16 megs) as far as I know. Most will only allow a couple megs or so.

I think people are more careful in the board because their comments hang around and don't scroll off into oblivion.

There's that plus we have the luxury of time in the forums to write a well thought out response which could take so long in chat that nobody would know what the hell you are responding to.

I suppose too that you're limited to talking to others who happen to be on at that moment. That could make it difficult to share ideas with others in other continents or time zones. Plus, chat doesn't have a search, I think.

Anyway, I'm not fond of chatrooms, though one-on-one IMs with pals is fun.

That was dead-on, anthrosub. In my case, I tend to hit the submit button too quickly, and thus I'm probably just as bad as poster to the fora as I would be in chat.

I occasionally chat on another site, but that site's Newbie room was a little difficult to break into. It's a little cliquish but not discouragingly so. However, when topics are broached they are not followed through thoroughly, and the topics are difficult to follow in the middle of all the greetings and off-topic conversations.

I have some wonderful memories of chatrooms, and still go into them ocassionally. With 60-80 people in the CM lobby I find it hard to keep up with the talk. Usually, if I'm feeling lonely I'll still go, participate some, but mainly watch. Like a lot of rooms, the lobby, imho, tends to be a bit more of a meat locker than I like, which spoils some of the fun too.

Guess it all depends on what you want when you go into a chatroom.

I hate JAVA for a start. I do go on MIRC to one room where cybering is not allowed and I know most in the room real life. But sometimes it can be really quiet too cos everybody is busy posting on the IC forums.
