there are programs in place in most city/states which can assist people with low income for energy costs. call and see what their prerequisites are. you also can plan your errands so that you use the least amount of gasoline possible. in the winter, wearing socks, two or more layers of clothing can also count. during times of difficulty, my kids and i did just that. we weren't cuddly warm but we got by. insulate your drafty zones as well as you can using whatever materials you have that are low cost (i.e. free). open window coverings when the sun is out and close them when it's not.
i suppose another thing that you can directly do is write letters not just here but to your elected officials and let them know how you feel. that corporate greed runs the country is pretty widespread knowledge, so who knows what it will take to change that.
jeb as president? i'm going to ride that glacier to algiers.

Well, I would think the biggest trouble with the wind and alternatives is how will the government squander your money? How would you meter wind? How would you tax water more than it is taxed now? Control is the issue...........Perhaps I will go to washington and dom the dims.

Unfortunately, sometime in the next decade, oil production will peak, but oil consumpsion will continue to rise. Until oil production peaks, supply will out paced demand and prices will be relatively low. After oil production peaks, demand will out pace supply. High demand and low supply means high prices. Within a decade or two, we will look back at $3.00 per gallon as the good old days.

There are no alternatives to petroleum when comparing BTUs per dollar. All of the alternatives will cost substanically more. Check out the following link to a speach given by Congressman Bartlett.

How about the assholes in congress and the senate, who make some hundred thousand a year, who are inscrutable to the IRS, who can make any amount of money speaking (not by law but by fiat) who make the laws of the land in accordance with the wishes of the land and who have such a hard job that they have special exceptions from living in america........... pas the law which the government says is too costly that we actually can deficit spend to find ALTERNATIVE HYDROGEN fuels such as water and wind (contains HYDROGEN) since no individual state or agency can do it and we bite the fucking bullet right now. RIGHT NOW. Don't hope the dam will hold, don't actuaralze the bridge collapsing with a couple hundred people on it, and weigh the cost against our insurance bankruptcies......and just say fuck it.

I will now quit passing on the cost of my party to my children, I am the government and I am the responsible party.

PUmp oil till it is gone, we are a producer of 2% consume 20 some percent natural gas produce 5% and consume 29%.....when do we learn to balance a checkbook.....

indeed, and what happened to the laws that required vehicles to get increasingly better gas mileage? somehow we ended up with humvees and expensive boxes that get less than 10 mpg. some interesting politics there if those law makers were doing what's best for the land.

doesn't sound like pink is too happy about the idea of increasingly higher utility bills. i'm not so thrilled by it, either. i wonder if we'd have been happier had some of the laws remained on the books that weren't too friendly to the oil companies and corporate america?

yes, it is usually best to fix that roof before it caves in on you instead of including the losses as part of a cost equation. last i heard, the worth of a human life in such equations was listed around $200,000. welcome to capitalism; democracy took off with dorothy in the hot air balloon i think.

Redrover Redrover let Rita come over

People where under prepared for Katrina and now they are over prepared for Rita. People living on the North Side of Houston and Conroe are even moving further North to avoid flooding. I 45 was made to go only ONE WAY North from Galveston to Buffalo on both sides. People here in Dallas are stocking up on water, gas, batteries, and being prepared for power outage. TX has gone out right crazy on the roads and in the stores. You have a better chance of comfort and survival just staying at home if you live in Galveston than being out with all the maniacs and in the bumper to bumper traffic with the hot sun.

Any how, I'm staying off the High Ways this weekend. I can't wait for the wind and rain. The creek where I have two turtles and some small cat fish is getting low. I also have a kite that I'd like to try out.

What really ticks me off on top of everything else is how this Congress is the spend and don't tax party. Somehow it thinks it can conduct a voluntary war, have a massive rebuilding of a major metro area (now TWO major metro areas!), have record pork spending, and still CUT taxes. The debt burden is just incredible. Congress has placed the burden of paying all this back on my generation, and they really just don't seem to give a crap about their kids and grandkids.

It's beyond irresponsible...it's just pure selfishness.

This isn't just an American thing, I've seen this same attitude in Federal and State politics here in Australia too. Its the classic "Screw you fella, I'm ok!" As long as they can afford to remain unlynched and retire on the over large pensions why should the majority of them give a damn about the rising generations who have to fix all the screw ups my generation has made.
