Status: offline 		I can't, because the quote doesn't exist. Maybe it's a horrible translation of something I'd recognize if it were translated correctly.

Edited to add: I'm just sort of surprised and dismayed by the way people keep recycling wrong Chinese philosophy quotes on the internet. They don't know whether the quotes are right or wrong, but they obviously don't bother to check, either. I guess the idea is that it's only Chinese; no one is going to know the difference anyway.

I think that the problem with any translation is it is open to each person interpretation.

Just look at the bible...lol

But seriously - some languages just do not have the engish equivilent, and so people use the word that best suits their interpretation. Its a bit like taking paint and paper and drawing a ball so one is creating art - its never going to be the same ball, painted by different people. To some, it isnt a ball at all.

Its an interpretation. The best thing anyone can do - it to take the original and translate it yourself using guides or learning the language - then its your interpretation.

Whether they are wrongly translated or not - they are still worth their own words. It might be more helpful if people wrote that they are based on the words of Tzu(for example) like say - choprah does on rumi - but i tend to think of words as art and even if the sentance is correct - each person will see it differently.

Status: offline 		Well, people are free to say and repeat whatever they want, but if it's not an accurate translation, they can't attribute it to the source. I don't want to go over and over this, because the last time I brought this up, I ruffled a few feathers, but in a thread about favorite QUOTES, I think it's important to get the quotes right.

In any case, that particular "quote" from Laozi is so far removed from anything real that I can't even recognize what it's SUPPOSED to be referring to.

These are some translators of the Daode jing who at least know what they are talking about, whether you agree or disagree with their interpretations:

Victor H. Mair
Wing-tsit Chan
Philip J. Ivanhoe
Moss Roberts
Arthur Waley
D.C. Lau

Most of the other translations are just horseshit.

Yes..and i'd like the URL for the source material, if it came from the 'net. Ot a citation to the book, etc., so i can find these great quotes myself if i like.
