I know Dominatrix is not right, but easily explained concept to "vanilla" people.

It is like saying Sci-Fi to SF fans. At least, however, SF fans only have one alternative for Sci-Fi.:)

It's an individual preference. Ask the person you're talking to what she prefers, would be my suggestion.

SherriA,

You mean actually talk to them?:) (Yes I'm being sarcastic. SherriA has a great answer and it is so obvious that I'm embarrassed I never thought of it.)

while shuffling his feet hoping no one realizes how stupid the original question was: I mean when I'm doing a fiction story and she is not really there. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket.

OK, that is stupid.[:)]

Thanks, SherriA, for pointing out what should've been obvious.

I'm not sure...I agree with Sherri. But...the one thing I do know is domme is not a word.
Its Domina for female Dominant. Although..whats to say it is'nt fem dom?

All I know is Domme is not the right word..

My personal preference is 'Dom' , or if speaking about women as Dominants as a gender then 'Fem Dom', or 'Male Dom' when talking about men.

I loathe the term Domme.

I agree with Sherri, too. Ask, we've all got different preferences.

However, Domme has been coined, is widely used and may one day become standardized if it's used often enough. Frankly, in the formal usages Dom is not an appropriate term either for a woman (at all) or a man (unless he's a benedictine monk especially of medieval time or portugese nobility).

Domina, in it's correct usage, is a title formerly given to ladies who held a barony in their own right. The loose translation is now simply "lady."

Neither of the terms, correctly used, have anything to do with dominance.

I like "Ma'am" by those I do not own (and from those I do) if an honorific is offered. I know women who will bristle if you call them "Ma'am." I prefer "Madame" from those who wear my collar although some hear "Madame" and think "senior woman at the house of ill repute." <shrug>

I've heard all the above terms used. Femdom seems, to Me, to refer to all Female Dominants as a whole( like Kingdom). I refer to myself as a Dominatrix, or Domme (my girlfriend's mentor says Dom-may LOL).

DOMME is a word because I said so. Whatever the Mistress wants is correct. Understand? It's like wearing fetish clothing -- whatever the Mistress feels like wearing is what is correct and the same goes for her title. I use whatever term I feel like using at the time.

As a gift, because I am a benevolent despot, I gave you the link to how to approach a Mistress below.

What should I use to refer to dominant women in general. (DWIG doesn't sound right.[:)])

dkitty -> RE: Domme, Domina, or Femdom which is right? (3/14/2004 8:08:37 PM)

I've served and known women who prefer all sorts of titles, and many who loathe titles altogether. Personally, I'm down with Domme and shake my head at FemDom. FemDom seems too much like a mainstream coined phrase. It's like referring to myself as a lesbian. I almost never use that term. I'm a dyke, dammit.  *tongue out*  And likewise, I'm a Domme.

If I'm speaking to or of someone and I don't know her preference I'll usually simply use her name or I might use the title Lady.

For dominant women in general... why not just the two words "dominant women?" It's obvious, to the point, and eeeeeeasy.
