Okay, this is silly, i know, but it's somewhat of a gap for me. Does "grok" mean anything more or different from "understand"? Where does the word come from?

The science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein coined the term in "Stranger in a Strange Land." From the book:

"'Grok' means to understand so thoroughly that the observer becomes a part of the observed—to merge, blend, intermarry, lose identity in group experience. It means almost everything that we mean by religion, philosophy, and science— and it means as little to us (because we are from Earth) as color means to a blind man."

You can read more about it here.

Definitely means more to me. In some ways I think grokking is a closer form of being with someone than loving.
