I was in a Borders bookstore downtown today looking in the sexuality/erotica section, and was pleased to find several books on S&M and B&D, however, the shelf right next to it was the "self-help" section. Why is it that?

We all have issues, even the vanilla folk!

either someone at Borders has a warped sense of humour, or they think anyone in the lifestyle is a sick pupy and needs help

thats my off the top of the head guess anyway

Perhaps the person stocking the shelf has no education and just doesn't quite know where to put the books?
I know at the Borders in Orange County they are in the sexuality section.

This may not be the case at Borders, but I know at the bookstore I used to work at the sections were arranged in alphabetical order. If that is the case the it would make sense that Self-help is by Sexuality, they are fairly close alphabetically.

It's because learning about your sexuality, whether you're reading The Joy of Sex or Different Loving, or Our Bodies, Ourselves is a form of self-help. The books are there together because the readers of them share a desire to look inward and make improvements in their lives by understanding themselves better. Doesn't have anything to do with the alphabet or prejudice or dumbass shelving clerks (at least not in the case of Borders). They just wanna sell books, and they (the big chains) are pretty good at it. Being good marketers, they group them by commonality of interest, so that when you are browsing Different Loving to figure out why whips excite you, you might notice The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and be tempted to see if has any answers as to why you tend to procrastinate.

At Barnes & Noble, they do not even keep "Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns" in stock. i had to order it to be delivered to my home via UPS (the store clerk took my order & neither of us was sure of which section it might be in so she asked what the topic was about so she could search the store's computer. She looked up at me confused and in a loud volume yells across the aisle to me, "BSM-whaaaat??" So, i replied, "No, not BSM ... it's B-D-S-M.". Then she asked me what the letters stand for. Geeez ... . It was very entertaining to see her reaction when i supplied her with the answer.

But, yes ... most books on the topic of BDSM are located right by the selfhelp books. i now know this because i purchased "The Story of O" at Barnes & Noble recently. Makes sense to me though ... when i purchased "Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns" it was on the idea of "Geeeeeez ... i need some help in bringing this all together in a more organized and vivid perspective of understanding, plus i had questions needing answering so that i could 'help myself' decide on a few things etc.

Bingo I think the sections are arranged alphabetically, I mean adventure is usually right when I walk in the door.
