Hi A/all,
I've heard I should try using shrinkwrap for CBT and I'm just wondering if any of you have used/experienced this and how safe it is. I'm talking about the kind you put over a gift basket or something and blowdry so it molds to the article in question. Does anyone who's tried this or know anything about it have any good tips?

According to my friend that works with this kind of shrink wrap to make gift baskets the shrink wrap can easily melt and burn the skin with melted plastic. This hurts like crazy if you have never experienced it, I am speaking on personal experience on that one

Even if it doesn't totally melt, it still partially melts in order to shrink. I don't know how hot that it would get, but this is something I think I would test someplace else first.

Another thought: What about hairs? What if the plastic melts hairs? Ouch, that's not a fun kind of pain (at least IMHO)

Thank you Siamsa, I fully planned to test it on myself first, but didn't even want to do that until I had more information. I don't want to get burned either

. Perhaps if you go slowly with the hair dryer? I don't know, I guess I'll wait for more replies. Plus, is there a difference in industrial quality shrinkwraps and those you can pick up at say a card/gift shop?

I don't know, the friend that I talked to makes the gift baskets at her job so her information is based on the industrial type of shrink wrap.

This is the only information that I have, maybe someone else has more advice.......

I've made a few gift baskets in my time. The plastic does not shrink until a certain degree is hit. Whether you use the hair dryer on low or not. It has to hit whatever degree it has to hit. I don't know the degree either. I'm only quoting my experience.

The more industrial shrink wraps don't shrink at all. You wrap them around. There usually is no heat involved. Like saran wrap type.

Even the meat cutters wrap goes through a heat tube to shrink it to the package. So no matter what you need that degree. Figure that out, then you'll know if you have a first, second or third degree burn, or no burn at all.

CENTERFOLD SHRINK FILM - 1500 ft. 100 Gauge
A high clarity 100 gauge PVC centerfold shrink film. This film has a high biaxial shrink of up to 40%. PVC is a very strong and flexible film that has lower heat requirements to shrink film (200 to 250 F) than Polyolefin (300 to 350 F); and meets requirements for secondary food contact. Use heat guns or heat tunnels to shrink - heat sealing equipment found HERE.

Looks as though yes, it will create burns by melting it.

Thank sub4hire, guess I'll scratch that idea, it's not worth my skin or the sub's...lol. Might just give saran wrap a whirl but that stuff can get very annoying.

any wrap that says it shrienks dosen't sound safe to me. Wrap it and watch it shrink.

Let me help you some with that anoying shrink wrap.. put it on a dowel so it twirls.. then have the sub spin for wraping his top half. You don't have to do the tedious run around him till below the waist.

Also, there is pallet wrap available. It is stronger than shrink wrap. So you're not walking into it blind, a pallet wrap is usually around 15 to 18 inches wide, 1500 to 2000 ft long and about $40 to $50. It seems like a lot to pay for it, but consider normal saran wrap is roughly $4 for 100 ft.
