here';s a question for all you submissives who are in charge of laundry or any one who wants to answer
If you take a terry cloth towl that is slightly scratchy but every time you wash it put downey or some other fabric sotener in the wash, will the slightly teery cloth scratch go away? These towls are not brand new they're years old, so I doubt if the scratch hasnt gone away by now it w/ill.

well, I find that the scratchyness factor works like this:

Towels dried on a line: MOST scratchy .... but also most fresh smelling!
REALLY new, or REALLY old towels from dryer: next most scratchy.
Mid-age towels (just a few months to a few years) : not so scracthy
Towels with regular fabric softener: not hardly scratchy

Frankly, I like line-dried stuff ... it can be a little more scratchy or stiff, but the freshness is worth it.

I find the most significant cause of the high "scratch" factor is in the quality of the towel. Cheap towels tend to be "stiff," regardless of fabric softener usage. Better quality towels have a higher thread count, which results in a softer towel. Same thing with sheets. Nothing less than 600-count for this girl.

If you don't like the "scratchies ", try Egyptian cotton terry cloth. Ulra soft and sensual. I also prefer Egyptian cotton bed linens. Both are a little more expensive, but last longer and the feel is well worth it.

edited to add. I'm right there with ya, Evanesce. Egyptian is 600-800 thread count. I must have posted right after you, didn't see your post there.

Quality of towel definately makes a big difference in softness.

Fergus, line dry the towels and then throw them in the dryer for a few minutes to soften them.

And I am a firm believer that dryer sheets in with the towels make the the towels less absorbent.

You guys I so know what you mean, walmart had some towls for three bucks and I touched them and it was like ROUGH SANDPAPER and I was like no way in hell do I want rough scratchy sandpaper drying my soft tender skin

You're right about those dryer sheets!

Anyway, a few minutes in the dryer later can be enough to remove that freshness that I like ... although I do use the dryer for convenience quite a lot ... nothing replaces the line-drying

And I don't mind scratchyness if the towles smeel fresh ;)

Unfortunately, in Hollywood, if you were to hang towels (or anything for that matter) out to dry, you would need to wash them again when they were dry....

We use a line from necessity (thank god we live in TX and not up north) and the new detergents with fabric softener in them work wonders. The clothes are almost as soft as when they were machine dried, and smell a lot better.

My step mom bought us some new towels that were pretty and fairly expensive. They were not rough at all , the problem is they barely absorb any water. It is weird to wrap yourself in a towel after a shower then still feel wet.
