American football is the game with the most rules in the world. It is truly a game of inches. The bottom line on that call the ref has a split second to decide if, in fact, the ball crossed the plane of the goal line. He called it a touchdown. On review of the play there has to be indisputable evidence in order to overturn a call. Clearly, from any camera angle there wasn't enough evidence to say he didn't score.
I have watched football for most of my life and I will tell you that complaining about the refs is useless. The NFL has made the game so intricate and so defined as to what can and cannot happen and what must happen for a play to be called a play. They are caught in their own trap. They make the rules so specific that instant replay is damn near a necessity. We, as spectators, have the luxury of watching plays at a fraction of their speed and from many camera angles. Getting on the refs because they have to make snap decisions in the blink of an eye is unreasonable. They are human and bound to make mistakes... somehow the perception of the refs has become that of a god-like figure that is all seeing and all knowing. That just isn't the case.
So, complain about the refs all you want but remember that the next time you have to make a snap decision and it ends up being the wrong one.
