As you can well imagine, there aren't many places to go for information on how to cane your slave. No luck finding anything at the local library.
I have been trying to find the best way to use a cane to safely take my slave to subspace. I know safety is most important here....warm up and cool down times as well as after care are just as important as the actual caning itself....
Any suggestions? This is something I really want to learn and become an expert on.

Canes are serious. If you screw up and hit his balls with a riding crop, no biggie after a while. With a cane instead he can be singing soprano.

My only advice is make sure his balls are not available for a slightly off target stroke. (There will be other good advice, but being strictly a receiver limits my knowledge.)

I find a Chastity device like the CB-2000, Curve or CB-3000 moves his balls forward and out of harms way.

For being adept with a cane, maybe a Karate class?

(Like using the Boy Scout Handbook for info on knots.

When I first started, I started with lighter things like flogging to paddling to whipping to caining. It's good to warm your slave/sub up with other things first then to just lay into there ass. It will take a little practice before you get to the point of never missing. Another thing, it's all in the wrist. You can hit someone and it could feel like a sraight blow, now anyone can do that. Or you can hit someone and it could hurt so good. I try to keep a staight wrist, and hit at a sraight angle. You can tell if your hitting correctly if you hear a good smack verses just a hit that sounds like a blow. Ohhh just thinking about it makes me wet.....

My opinion is more a less a rehash of all the above great advice, but in my own words...
Aim is extremely important. There's no need for huge arm swings, it really is all in the wrist. With well practiced aim, a set of very nice stripes can be attained with very little effort on your part

As iwsy has already said, make sure those balls are nicely tucked in out of harms way.
Be sure to warm up, it doesn't have to be some other tool, it can be the cane, with gentle but sharp strokes and I do mean gentle.
Use the cane on yourself a little, at the top of your thigh, so that you can learn just how little force can create a nasty sting. Always know your tools.
Practice your aim until it's perfect, use a cushion which will indent where you made the strike, draw a line on it and place it at the height which matches your favourite submission position.
Practice your aim till it's perfect.
Oh, and did I mention practice your aim till it's perfect?

Ive always used a small circular motion not unlike that used in whipping egg whites in a copper bowl.. allowing the the flick of the wrist on the upward to indicate serverity ... I start lightly working the buttock cheecks..the undersides.. moving over the hillock.. with a lightly tap tap tap tap... using the length of the cane to bring the blush up.. then increasing the pressure until I am happy .. several good sound snaps snaps snaps... generally have them singing.. and a slow decrease ending up with smoothing the hand over the heat... As for books try *screw the roses send me the thorns* it was my first how to book and I still use the basics it taught me today.

I also recommend "Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns: The Romance and Sexual Sorcery of Sadomasochism" by Philip Miller, Molly Devon, and William A. Granzig. Some other books that you might find helpful are "The Loving Dominant" by John Warren; and "The New Topping Book" by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy. Not long ago I gave one of my subs a work book (I know it sounds silly) for his "vanilla" wife, that I found in a bookstore. I can't remember the name of it to save my life right now, but perhaps someone will know it. It is for housewives who are interested in the lifestyle. It actually had some beginning techniques in there, and other wonderful ideas for those just starting out.

The books listed above are all available at Amazon.com (how cool is that!).

What she said here are things to always remember. Always know your tools, practice practice practice before engaging with your submissive! She did mention practice your aim until it's perfect! I am actually more into riding crops and paddles myself.

Hi Kat and welcome!

I have a question...has anyone shown you where NOT to hit on someone? There are places on the lower back and into the upper ass that I think of as a 'no fly zone' because of the potential to do damage. Also it's important with a cane to stay away from the back of joints (behind the knee, etc) and away from areas where the bone is close to the surface of the skin. Understanding the anatomy and physiology involved can be a big help.

Also, it's very easy to break the skin with the cane. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it can be if you're not intending to. Cane marks are beautiful and happen easily, but if your sub has to shower in the gym at work it could be a problem.

I have been to a few sites that talk about caning. I am aware of the kidney and joint areas that need to be avoided for sure! I also know that any area where the bones are close to the surface are places to avoid - I have really been thinking about all of these things.
Warm up is always slow and easy - my husband is the most important person in my life and I sure don't want to cause any damage or perm injury to him for any reason.
My love for him also makes after care just as important as anythng else W/we do.
Right now I have a riding crop that W/we use but O/our interest is in the cane and it's proper use.
These messages have all been read carefully - the books mentioned will be found and gotten.
Thanks so very much for all this information!!! W/we welcome any additional ideas!

Best advise I have is to find someone to do "Anatomy of a Bottom 101" with you, and show you in person how to use a cane effectively. Canes are exquisite...and can be utterly disasterous if you fuck up. Find a teacher you trust, and LEARN YOUR ANATOMY FIRST!

look up the name Conrad Hodson. He has a few extreamly good articles on the subject. The cane is a wonderful thing to use if done right. I enjoy using it, but remember that it might not feel like you are hitting hard but you are delivering a hard impact. Also if you are doing the ass cover the tailbone with your hand (this dose two things it protects it and if you accidently hit yourself you know how hard you are hitting ;) Get a pillow that will show marks and use that as a practice target. Different canes have different impact. There are very few places you can hit with a cane. The ass below the tailbone is the best stick to that. It also helps if the sub is laying down. You are protecting his private parts and it give you more padding as the muscles are not tight. Stick to the ass untill you are very comfortable with what you are doing. Also be very very careful not to rap the cane around the hip. When you come down (especially when you are delivering harder strokes) you have a tendicy to move forward so be aware of this. Good luck and have fun.

Have you given thought to doing a sensual caning as opposed to a harder hitting 'punishment' type caning?

I had the privilege of watching a sensual caning at a play party and the Dom took his sub very deep into subspace with it - basically just 'tapping' the slave with the cane in time and with the beat of the music playing - and yes he would give the occasional harder rap with the cane, just enough to 'up the intensity' a notch.

One of the benifits of a sensual caning is you dont have to be as wary of hitting the 'no-fly zones' as you would if using the cane in a 'full force' blow, but it can still be enough of a stimulation to send your sub/slave at least a couple of galazies away.

Looking up Conrad Hodson now - thanks for that info.
Yes, I have my slave face down on the bed with a pillow on the far side beside his hip to be sure there is no wrap around...I am using a riding crop now.
I am not using a lot of force - just letting the whip action of the riding crop do the work for me. He really loves this - the soft part of his butt and the top of his legs are the target areas for now.
Good idea on putting my hand on his tailbone just to be on the safe side....
The sensual caning is the idea at this point. This does put him in a very relaxed and happy frame of mind. This is very satisfying for both of U/us.
I would love to have someone with lots of experience teach me the fine art of caning!

Different canes have different responses.

Natural materials are much different than manmade materials in sensation and operation.

Each have their benefits and shortcomings.

I have canes that are more like switches really, bamboos that are like a 1/8 inch in diameter to a 3 inch in diameter cane that is more like a small baton. Acrylics and me don't get along, I wind up snapping them puppies like no tomorrow. lolol. The metal canes and wood canes suit me just fine - haven't broken those near as often as I have the acrylics.

That being said there is NOTHING more aggravating and difficult to process than SDS's when you are being caned - a wonderful thing to remember when caning someone! You can do a SDS with a mere tap and after a while oh yeah baby that starts to SMART! They'd do just about ANYTHING to get you to stop LOL! Beautiful sadistic torture when they are firmly strapped down, staright jackets and hospital restraints are lovely assets for helping one deliver an SDS. Oh yeah - in case you aren't familiar with the term SDS (well if you are a submissive that has experienced SDS's then oh hell yeah you are intimately familiar with them even if you weren't aware of the term SDS, LOL!)...

SDS = SAME DAMN SPOT!!!

And boy oh boy is it EVER effective. Esepcially on the "sweet spot" (the curve where the ass meets the thigh, oh such a tender and yummy little spot for clothespins, and pinches, and all sorts of lovely evil mean sweet little endorphian releasers hehehe). Speaking of clothespins, canes are IDEAL for whacking dem puppies off. Much better than a crop, I find canes are way more accurate and focused, so I tend to use them for all sorts of stuff lol.

I love those things. *sigh*

With all that has been advised, and all good advice I might add, the only thing you might want to try is a simple technique of flicking your wrist. If you are tapping his bottom in a rhythmic motion then just flick your wrist tightly and quickly up and down to land on the same spot, he will feel it for sure. That is guaranteed to make a mark and get his attention. Its really all in the wrist. You dont want to 'hit' with a cane. Thats really not its purpose. Its always good practice to try the technique on your own thigh. Its a simple wrist action to learn and one you will get wonderful results from. Just remember that the constant tapping and not knowing when the blow comes is just as fun.
