I was just having a long conversation with a Dom.
they did not have a picture.
I was told it was not neccesary for them to have one.

I'm just wondering, do You perfer to see who
you are talking to, or does it not matter?

Pictures are always appropriate at some point. My profile is nil, but if someone wanted to see my picture and made a polite request I'd have no problem showing it. The reason a picture is not part of my profile is that I have ultimately decided that the world is indeed a very small place and being overly out about my private life is just a liability I don't need.

One thing I NEVER noticed before about two days ago was that you can actually initiate a contact by clicking on the button below someone's profile that reads "Send Pictures" and actually send them a picture in the event that your profile doesn't have a picture (as mine does not) - in this case I refer to the little profile of someone before you click through to "View Full Profile." Frankly, the CM user interface is shite, but we have to work with it here.

Anyway, yes - knowing with whom you are interacting by way of visual aids is an enormous help in my view. If there is a mismatch in terms of anyone's appearance you might as well find that out as soon as is reasonably possible. It doesn't have to be the first thing on the agenda, but I think it's a realistic part of anyone's agenda. If anyone is too evasive on the picture issue - well, that should set off some alerts in your mind.

Master and I were recently speaking about this....

I will speak with someone for ONLY a brief time without a picture - if after several conversations no picture is offered or sent - I wonder what they could be hiding.

So - yes, I like to know WHO it is I am speaking with.

We don't post a picture in our profile, nor do we ask for one. We -do- like to see to whom we are speaking, if we are interested in spending time with them, however, if we will only be corresponding over the internet, if they prefer a measure of visual anonymity, we are fine with that.

As far as the individuals that we will be spending time with, we usually wait and see what they look like when we meet. We are looking for things that transcend the body, and for us, appearances can not only be deceiving, but they are the absolute smallest aspect of what might attract our attention that they end up being close to irrelevant, and the 2-dimensional image available in a picture rarely shows the nature of a person.

If someone wishes to see what -we- look like, then we are glad to oblige, provided that they have the werewithall to figure out how to see what we look like in person. *grins*

I agree with yourkitten. It's ok if there's not one in the profile, though I do prefer it if there is, but when you start talking, I'm one who wants to see the person I'm talking with.

Yes, I prefer to see the person I'm talking to.
I think most people do.

I'm an artist and very visual. I like to look through profiles and very rarely stop at ones without pictures. I have my picture posted for the same reason. How can I expect to view one if I don't have one posted myself?

I won't look at a profile without a picture unless I get sent an intriguing email from someone. Just personal preference. If you're on a personals site in 2005/6 and want to attract people, having a picture is the way to go.

I respect people who choose not to, but I won't look at their profile spontaneously.

I insist on a picture at some point---many are afraid of the "public posting" to avoid discovery by someone that may know them---but sooner or later a pic is required, IMHO

I much prefer a well written profile completed to a picture--

Apparently my profile still has my picture but whenever I update it -- even just to add a note -- it disappears from my posts.

Pictures are tricky, too. I, for one, hate almost 100% of all pictures of me. But I figured it wasn't fair on a site like this not to have one so I picked the least offensive one I could find (offensive to my eyes).

I have to agree with this post as a fellow artist.

As I'm not looking for anything other than friends to chat with, it doesn't bother me too much; although eventually I would like to put a face to a conversation. What is important to me is whether I am enjoying the conversations or not.

However, if I were in different circumstances, i.e. looking for a relationship other than friendship, I would question why they didn't want me seeing them - I think that is human nature.

Like others I prefer a photo in the profile (I generally won't contact a profile without a pic) or when they first contact me. If someone won't send a photo then I will not consider allowing things to go beyond an online friendship. As far as what kind of photo is appropriate, all I look for is a normal photo, fully clothed, preferably at home or doing something they enjoy. When I see a nude photo, especially a very sharp, crisp one, I tend to wonder what porn site it came off of. Those are my rules to help me deal with some of the internet craziness.

Being in a relationship and not looking for another partner, I don't feel the need to have my picture posted. There's no one I'm trying to impress, or scare! Ha. Besides, I see lots of people complaining about getting too much mail from unwanted types...no picture certainly cuts down on that.

I most definitely prefer one... however, if the relationship is of just basic online friendship or acquaintance a picturs is rather unimportant. If the relationship is a consideration to build to a more meaningful relationship... Then a Picture is a MUST!

I prefer a picture. I understand why some people don't want to do this but I still would like to see who it is I'm talking too. I guess it just let's me put a face with a name so to speak.

i think that it's only fair that, if you write to someone that has a picture, a picture should accompany the email. it's common courtesy IMO.

I refuse to talk to anyone who does not display a picture of themselves in their profile; not doing so raises a red flag for obvious reasons. I want to make certain the prospective female I'm talking with pleases me visually, but outside of this, I just like to put a face to the words.

Additionally, I like to make certain of their identity early on. I don't waste time with interwankers who want to chat via IM for three months before the first phone call, either. I get a phone number, live conversation, full name, address, age, AND picture early on in the game. Not hitting upon these crucial points can get you into trouble.

Namely, a big, 40 year-old Harley dude posing as a petite brunette girl with double-Ds.

it's not what's on the outside that makes a person, it's what's inside that counts
