I've never heard this called torture before. It was always called punishment..and usually with a quarter. A bit harder to hold on the wall with your nose.

Never worked on me....hmm..oh well.

to kind of twist the thread a little bit (into more of an 'unusual torture' deal) - this is one that is still being used in boot camp - it is reserved for days when the boots have gotten their inoculation shots and the drill instructors are not allowed to use the more traditional physical means of correction (push ups, etc) - anyway, you are required to hold your pencil between the tips of your forefingers - arms straight out in front of you, pencil at eye height - I have never known that a 2 or 3 ounce pencil could get so heavy so fast

What basic training were you in? I was in the air force, never did they do anything like that to us. That doesn't mean the marines or army wouldn't though.

Even trying to hold your own arms like that holding nothing is very hard to do.

Midear Gloria-

In USMC bootcamp, in the early eighties, it was done, along with the same excercise with a rifle or sometimes some other light object. One DI had units in need of 'special motorvational regard' hold a papercup ful of water on the back of their hands.

The oddest thing about boot camp was the day you realised that even if you could explain what it was like, no one would believe it<g>.

I know what you mean. When I was in basic training a friend of mine was in the Marines in basic. He once wrote me a letter stating he was doing his "routine" run of 5 miles. Someone opened a door he broke his nose. They told him to keep running.

Never did I ever experience anything even remotely that harsh.

Gloria-

I have a friend who was in the army around the same time I was in the Corps, and he didn't believe that our bootcamp was 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, for thirteen weeks till he had indepant confermation (the Bartender was another former marine).

Agreed - unless you have gone through it there is no real comprehension of what it is like.

It's like prison. At least what I envision prison to be. No freedom. You can't pee unless you get permission. Slave labor. Stupid labor. You work from 5am to 9pm.

Hmm lets see.....very organized. You moreless reply with a number. You are told you are dog crap every five minutes. If you do what you are told you are told you are dog crap every 7 minutes instead of five.

Anyway, I've never been to prison but I do think the military readied me for it.
