Status: offline 		I have noticed the CM boards have become more of a space for "kinky white people" to hang out and share ideas.

I have had here in the past, friends of other races who have seemed to slowly fade out.
It bums me out. I live in the inner city and have friends of many races and I learn most and feel more comfortable when their is a mixture of races here. As I am of mixed races.

Does anyone have any idea's of why the CM boards seem to have taken this turn?
I am only talking about the Forum Boards, not the site in general.
I am curious as to what people think about the Forums attracting a more "white" crowd and or white people feeling more comfortable to interact here.

What is your experience as far as race is concerned in your local area's and how does it compare with the boards here?

Most off my friends are from other cultures. Alot off people I chat with are from different parts off the world.

As for these boards, well, its just ended up like that. Nothing racial. Maybe all the other cultures have partners...

I'd like to know where those folks from non white heritage have gone to as well I miss some of them even from messaging areas....

brightspot, one thought has come to mind and it's based on my experience on the internet over the last 10 years in both chat and communities.. There is a cycle in all things. Some cycles work on the holiday seasons, school year and even seasons, all which tend to have people doing other things rather than spending a lot of time on the net. Another cycle is simply bassed on too much of the one thing. People may need a break else it is just same old same old. I'd hazzard a guess that if you could view the boards here over a long period of time we'd see that the demographics are fluid but they repeat themselved in cyclic repitition.....

Thank you for this thread it brings the subject to light..... As for my local community racially? I haven't a clue. I never was a real part of it and now I've withdrawn back to my isolation I have even less idea....

That's strange, I never noticed that until you just mentioned it. Maybe there are more white people on this website overall, and that would account for it?

I don't see any reason why the forums would attract any particular race over any other race. I feel comfortable talking to anyone, no matter what race they are, although good general manners are a big plus in all races.

In my small hometown, there are a lot of racial problems, but now that we moved to "the big city", I don't see any racial issues going on here at all. Can't compare that, since I never noticed a problem here about this.

(I thought the word 'kinky' vanished when the internet became popular?)

No idea about the racial mix of the London Scene, I'm not a very scene person though once I move there is one club I've spotted that I like the sound of and will probably attend. Again, I'm not much bothered by the 'mix' of races, I react to someone by what their personality is, not by what colour their skin is, but I guess I'll find out when I turn up the first time

Not entirely so old friend.. One person (who I have a high regard for) uses almost indecypherable script and colours.. The renound MistressDREAD..... ..


On another matter and equally important.. If and when I visit Old Blighty, I'll take you up on a couple of pints of the best English Ale. I've never tasted it so you may need to organize several slaves (or a Zoo keeper) to get my inhebriated carcus home (or to the Bear enclosure at the London Zoo)

I've never lost a guest yet, no matter how impressed they have been with the local ale. Loosing guests would definatly be a blight on the reputation as a good host

Status: offline 		We left the "community" several years ago because of prejudices towards not only people of color but also towards swingers, bi males, homosexual males and females and pro dominas. It was our experiece in that "community" that you either fit into the monogamous (with the occassional bi female plaything) couple with a male dom and a female sub or you were not fully welcomed.

Master's "house" is full of ethnic diversity. Master is a Scot, Head Bitch is Austrian, I am Irish, r is a mix of German/Cherokee/African, a is Norwegian, k, his "little girl" is American Black (she cannot trace her ancestry, but we suspect it is Barbados.)

Master and Head Bitch are swingers as well as owners so they bring all kinds of ethnicities home after a party.

FYI, the rest of us are only sexually active with Master.

As for the CM Boards, I do the posting but almost everyone in the house reads my posts.

I have found this forum much more diverse than the local BDSM community here.

I just pulled up some old demographics, for the city of Detroit, and our city is well over 80% Black or African American (that's how it's listed - stats were from the year 2000).

Our "public" oriented local BDSM community is probably 0-5% at events. Why? Honestly, I don't know, and have wondered what's up myself. I've always found that a bit odd, but when discussing it, with others in the community, I've had people suggest that the private community numbers are more reflective of the demographics at large.

Status: offline 		I am usually not aware of the race of the posters unless they have a picture as their avatar, and I'm not sure how race would play into the comfort level of people in a general BDSM internet forum. It's open to everyone and covers a variety of topics.

We have a nice mix of backgrounds in my local group, but most do not post on the forums here at CM. The yahoo groups are used more widely.

Status: offline 		My theory for awhile has been that it takes leisure time and a fair amount of expendable assets to be an active part of the public scene. White people tend to have more of both, so they are more likely to be an active part of the scene.

I also think because the scene HAS grown into a white majority, that it's harder to get the mix-up going. Same reason the scene here is mostly het when we all know there's a huge homo kink culture out there, just not mixing in here.

That being said, each group will vary and as long as we are truly welcoming and inclusive, it works out in the end.

I'm surprised that this thread hasn't happened before (since I haven't seen LA reference other old threads, I'm assuming that). Its one of those questions that pops up every so often.

Overall it seems like the scene is getting more diverse than how it was about nine or ten years ago when I first got started, but where I am locally (southern New England) there are still very few blacks and I can't really think of many people of color of other backgrounds that I've seen. So I think that the forums pretty much mirror that.

At least for blacks, there is a bit of a scene developing, but frankly its very new and in many ways kind of set apart from the rest of the scene. I think there are a lot of cultural and religious issues that blacks have problems resolving (which I personally didn't have) to at least feel comfortable self-identifying as being into BDSM, as well as it can be difficult to walk into a room that looks very different than you for some people (I'm used to being in predominately white communities so I didn't have that issue).

I remember one group my owner and I go to and a black guy had come for the first time so I spent time talking to him and he now is a regular with the group. But he told me a year or so later that had he not seen me there and talked to me, he probably would not have returned. Its not a function of anyone having been rude, because no one was. It was simply a function of level of comfort. And I can understand that. Hell just in terms of the music choices at most dungeons, its not exactly a diverse selection (celtic music that makes you want to go to sleep typically).

So anyways just a few of my thoughts on it.

P.S. - I know there are other ethnic groups that fall under the people of color umbrella but I only focused on blacks since thats the only group I felt comfortable going into generalizations about motivations.

It's just that white people are still the majority. People of other races are still posting, it just have to search for them sometimes.

Status: offline 		Even when I lived in NYC I noticed more whites than any other "race". At Conversio Virium one February we had a panel of African-American in the scene talk about their experiences. They said it was harder to get involved because it was harder to come out to yourself about your interests especially if you were a bottom or sub. I've never seen a panel for other "racial" groups.

I don't know current statistics for internet use but I wouldn't be surprised if its still a majority of users are white males.

So combine more difficulties offline coming to grips with being kinky with less awareness or experience with the internet and I'm not surprised that whites are still a majority.

Also I'm betting the majority of folks here do not participate on the forums so the forums are an even more skewed view of who is here becuase I think personality plays a lot into whether or not you post on forums. I'm not going to make any comments about "race," "gender," and personality types.

Status: offline 		Only the west has a higher percentage of caucasian people...globally, they're the minority. The west is also the place where the internet use per capita is highest--people in the west are considered wealthy by some standards ( remember, there are still places where running water and indoor plumbing are novelties...the internet doesn't even make the short list there).

Factor in the fact that CM is an english only site, and it's not hard to see why it is the way it is. Think of it this way--do you frequent BSDM sites based in China? India? The Ivory Coast? Out of all the people you know, how many are fluent in more than their native language? I'm going to guess that, on average, the pecentage is fairly low.

If you add in the fact that the western 'culture' tends toward a more liberal view of 'normal', and doesn't generally impose harsh punishments for those willing to step outside the boundardies, it's even easier. If you're worried about the possibility of losing your job or a few friends should your particular kinks be discovered, consider what the person who could be thrown in prison, or brutally killed thinks about opening up about theirs.

Status: offline 		I think it depends on what part of the "lifestyle" you're talking about as well as the heritage background. As far as D/s goes all you have to do is look at the culture that one comes from and you'll most likely see that they already have D/s as part of it. I'm hispanic and I come from a very D/s heritage with my father being the Dominant as well as my grand-fathers on both sides and their fathers before them. In other families it's the women that are Dominant and the men submit. Either way it is very much ingrained in our culture that one is Dominant and one is submissive for the relationship to work (most times. not always). I've seen the same in the asian culture. So D/s is not a new idea or really a kink in these backgrounds.

But sado/masochistic kink is a different story. In my family I'm the most outspoken about living as I wish. My family doesn't really understand me but they're accepting. I learned that kink is a bedroom thing that is only kept in the bedroom and not discussed with others. I've found this is true of other hispanic families too. Personal things are just that, personal. What you do in your bedroom is your business and only discussed with close friends. I've also had black girl friends that were very much the same way. They would discuss their kink with the closest of girlfriends but thats about it. They wouldn't even think of being out to their family.

So all in all, it is only the "whites" that I see that make a big deal about D/s. Especially in the U.S. Most other heritages say "Eh, had it for generations now. It's part of the foundation of our culture. No big deal." And as far as S/M goes, whites are the only ones that have to scream it from the rooftops. Other cultures just say "Keep it to yourself, you don't need our want to know." This is what I've seen anyway.

Status: offline 		I, personally, don't find culturally constructed or socially constructed dynamics based on biological/perceived sex/gender or age as the same as being into BDSM. One you do because you are trained/taught that way; the other you do because of your personality and your choice.

I wasn't speaking about anything outside of Western culture, specifically the panel I went to at Conversio Virium and other people of "minority racial" groups about similar issues of being kinky, being out, and being non-white.

Status: offline 		Well, that is one way of looking at it tammyjo. But I think that as long as we seperate BDSM from our cultures in the U.S., it'll never get to an acceptable level to where we can be out and not have to worry about whether we'll lose a job or friends and family over it.
