Status: offline 		I have to go to the dentist today to get more cavities filled. I don't mind admitting it. I'm deathly afraid. Last week was hell. The gas did not work properly. The needle did not work properly. I lost My cool and swore at the dentist. I freaked. I was so worked up when I walked out of there that I was shaking.

I do not mind pain. Do not get Me wrong. I like it actually. I can withstand a direct blow to the face and laugh about it, but I can not handle the dentist at all. They terrify Me. I just took eight Tylenol 1's for the anticipated pain and three milligrams of Ativan. I am a nervous wreck.

Do any of you guys have the same problem, or am I just a big baby?

Status: offline 		Yeah, you're a big baby. Just kidding. I tried to tough it out one time having a filling replaced by declining the novacaine. Last time I'll make a dumb ass decision like that!!! OUCH. And yes, before the dentist was finished I asked her to stop, administer the novacaine then start again. I wimped out. Didn't help that she was not paying much attention to the depth of the drill but spent more time flirting with the attractive, young dental assistant. Under different circumstances the voyeur in me would have enjoyed the show but not that day. I usually can handle pain very well and don't take pain meds when prescribed after treatment.

Another time, after cutting the end of my finger off on a table saw, I just about punched the doctor in the emergency room as he was poking the nerve block needle into the end of my stump to numb the area before reattaching the end. Must have hit a nerve. I apologized later but the pain was so sharp at that particular moment, I couldn't help balling up my fist (on the good hand) and barking GD Doc, what the hell did you hit? He let me off the hook on that one but will probably put me under next time if there ever is one. I never took the pain meds he prescribed either although I'm told they were Goooood ones. Tylenol did the trick.

Status: offline 		Awe, (hee heeee) Dentists are the worst! Then again a toothache is almost as bad.
Let me offer a suggestion, take what ever they'll give you, then relax as much as possible.
Pay attention to your breathing, focus on anything but the Pain, maybe if your lucky
you'll find a Happy Spot. Last time I did this I freaked the dentist out, my BP dropped significantly. Only problem was he shook me awake before he was done!

Heee, heee, baby...........

Status: offline 		When I was a little girl our family dentist was a sadist, I know he was!

I never had novocaine until I was around 20 years old... the family dentist did not give it. He pulled one of my front baby teeth (the adult one had grown in behind it) sans novocaine, and when it finally came out the root was still in the baby tooth.

I remember making the appointment with the dentist who gave me novocaine for the first time... I was so terrified I was crying on the phone making the appointment. He was wonderful, but that has not alleviated my terror of the dentist.

I desperately need to go now, but I am (that word again) terrified. There is a sedation dentist near me who I am trying to get up the courage to call, but just the thought of picking up the phone and dialing the number makes me feel sick.

So no Kenin, you're not alone, even though you ARE strange <wink>

Status: offline 		I'd say most people definitely fall into your category. The breathing comment is an excellent bit of advice for those that want to learn how to control pain.

Needles bore me {no matter how big they are} and I view pain as a challenge.

Psyche yourself up and remember control breathing.

Status: offline 		Sir..i work in a dental office , and we work hard to ease any anxiety...Frankly my Dentist gives a injection you can't feel, and we treat all our patients as family. Drive to Ct and see us. any help please ask.

Sure, I was nervous about having my wisdom tooth pulled, but that was because I didn't know how much it would hurt. I was almost crying between the time the Novacaine wore off and the Vicodin kicked in. Hope I don't need that done again.

I think it has to do with the fear of aging, and the fear of death. I think psychoanalysts interpret dreams in which one looses their teeth as a fear of death. I understand how they came with that... anyway, 3 facts :

All my teeth were removed after something nasty went BANG in my face. lots a plastic surgery and no more teeth.... has some draw backs but guess what I can take em out and give them a good scrub with a nail brush (The dunney brush is too big) rinse them and put them back ... easy ehhh?

Now if you need extractions, I can help.. no charge!... (just my return airfare)... just need a #8 detonator and 6' slow burning fuse and a box of matches...... you strapped in chair (bolted to cement floor), mouth wedged wide open amd detonator fixed to tooth with gaffer tape...... I light fuse and run like hell .... later after the bang I clean up mess, release you and administer a large glass of scotch for medicinal purposes..... No waiting or feeling the tooth being ripped out......

Status: offline 		Well, as a follow up I made it. I am glad I am not the only one that goes through this torture. This time the gas worked. I did not feel him put the needle in, nor do any susbsequent drilling. My pet was holding My hand the whole time (awwwww. she loves Me) I did not feel any digging or filling. Before I knew it the dentist was done. I was feeling very sick and they wouldn't let Me get off the chair for a minute. When I did I was woozy and dizzy. No sooner did I get out of the dentist's office did I vomit hard.

Fortunately I had a ride home because I was spaced out, weak and dizzy.

But the key point to note here is that I made it!!! I am so proud of Myself. It took hours for the effects to wear off. My pet held Me for a while and carressed Me for a while so I could relax which was really nice. The freezing is finally gone now. Things are back to normal.

I have to go back for yet another filling in a week. I wonder what bundle of joy this one is going to bring. Heh.

I will pass on the explosives or not asking for freezing or anything. That would be suicide for me.

Status: offline 		Master hates the dentist. He had a toothache for months before He just had to go, by then it had turned into a nasty abscess. Because of His health problems we had to get a doctor's clearance before the dentist would do anything. It was three days later when He finally got it pulled.

I have pics of Him afterwards - His face is very swollen and His eye is swollen shut. However the pain was nowhere near what it had been and in a few days it was all healed. Next time the subbie is going to put her foot down and drag Him there before it gets that bad again!

I also hate going to the dentist, due to the dental work I had as a child to make room for my adult teeth in my small jaw. I've had this filling replaced about half a dozen times, it would usually only last a couple of years before it would crack and/or fall out. The same dentist who treated Master has put a gold crown on it now (expensive, but nowhere near as bad as getting fillings every couple of years). I was surprised at how good he was, I was nervous when I went there but it didn't hurt anywhere near as much as I thought. I have to have another done soon and I'm actually not nervous at all now

Status: offline 		I would rather have the hell beat out of me before than go to the dentist. Going to the dentist has always been bad for me, and I really don't know why, I've never had a real bad experience at one. So I'm not sure why, but they do terrify me.

Thanks for the offer. I wonder why they do not offer any of these technical advances up here? Maybe they are bigger sadists than Me? heh. It is comforting to find out I am not alone though.

Reality ~ you may need a litte plastic surgery but the head would be intact.. Hearing may take a while to return fully and you'd need to hose down the other end before offering a change of underware....

General ~ besides I'd just some one with explosives ability not major surgery in numerous areas or a performer of miracles.. I leave that to the Adeptus Extremeess .... On second thoughts, do you have copious quantities of supa-glue and miles of duct tape??? Wanders off innocently....

Status: offline 		I've had about six years of orthodontia and a few cavities because of all the nasty appliances I had in my mouth at one point. Now I'm a brushaholic because I too am a wuss. I fear the dentist - and the doctor - visits.

I don't think it has much to do with fearing age, as one poster commented, so much as it does with pain - at least for me. I HATE pain. I'm a miserable, evil, cruel bi... err... so-and-so when I'm in pain. I want to curl up and pretend I've stopped living until it subsides.

Status: offline 		Here in Florida many dentists practice sedation dentristry. The patient takes a pill , falls asleep and remains asleep while the dental work is performed. It is safe, painless and more teeth can be worked on at one time. I would check around where you live and see if that service is available.
