I thought I'd pass this on to anyone interested.

I received a new sound card for my computer about a week ago. I built a new computer last July but held off on the sound card because I knew this new card would be released late summer/early fall. I just recorded my first LP and burned it to disk and it's wonderful. It has software that "cleans" out any clicks, pops, and hissing. You can also record from cassettes. Using Nero, you can then convert the recording to CDA format so it will play on any CD player.

I know there are other ways to do this by hooking up an amplifier and turntable to your computer but having this built right into the sound card is great. Unfortunately, the card is a bit pricey ($400) but if you have a lot of albums you save the money by simply converting them to CD instead of buying them all over again.

The sound card is made by Creative Labs (Soundblaster) and the model is the X-Fi Elite Pro.

In aus you can buy this turntable for $100 from tandy and it does the same thing.

What sort of sound card do you have?

It's called the X-Fi Elite Pro made by Creative Labs. The card mounts inside the computer and connects to an external box with all the controls and input jacks. It also came with a ton of audio software designed specifically for the X-Fi processor. I've been reading audio boards to hear what others have to say about it and most people are completely blown away.

For example, if you copy a store bought CD and burn the copy to disk...the copy will sound better than the original. You can copy cassette tapes as well as LP's and it comes with software that cleans the sound of unwanted clicks, pops, or tape hiss. Creative was losing market share to motherboard manufacturers that include onboard sound, so they developed this new technology that's so good people will buy it even if they already have sound capability. It has three modes...entertainment, audio creation, and game. Each mode changes the cards internal setting to optimize how it will be used.

It's also designed to work with home theater systems and multi-speaker setups. They did everything designing this card...it's simply amazing. I don't think that turntable you mentioned can do all this.

Im one of the people that dont care too much for sound cards, my on board card works good enough ..

What I'm chasing is the ability to use cassettes, a turntable and my reel to reel tapes as uinput, clean & mix then burn to CD.. Any thoughts (I'll probably be dedicating one computer for this.. )

Hi. I have a Video Capture Device, connected to my computer, by USB2. I am converting my Vidoe Tapes to DVD, with the DVD Recorder in my computer. It can also do AUDIO ONLY, wo I will probly use this for my Albums and Cassette Tapes.

Thannks for the into on the Sound Card. I love sound Balster, and Have Sound Blaster Live in my computer. I seen a card like yours last year, with those feathures your talking about, but it had a different name at the time.

PS for Iron Bear. You might have to be very careful with those Reel to Reel tapes. I did mine many years ago onto cassette, and the tape broke a few times, from being old and brittle. I did get them all done though, using Tape on the oppisitew side of the recorded side. Now I can list to "Tie a Yellow Ribbon on the old oak tree" and "Funky Chicken". Next is to record them on DVD...and maybe put them in a Box burried for 100 years..so people in the future can hear them too...and say, "What was wrong with those people bck then" !

The X-Fi can do cassettes, LP's, or reel-to-reel. It has a pair of RCA jacks (R and L) for input plus a ground if using a turntable. I believe the soundcard BalletBob is talking about is the Audigy 2. That card is now their number two line of soundcards. The X-Fi series is about 10 times better in processing capacity and sound production accuracy. You would have to switch between which device was connected unless you bought a switch box of some sort.
