Offhand I'd say it's because it usually involves people having food, I believe it's a contraction of "meeting" and "lunch."

"Munch"... why?

On version relates a story something like this... The first "munch" was called a "BurgerMunch" and was started in the SanFrancisco Bay area by a member of alt.sex.bondage back in the early 90's.

As Emeraldslave mentioned above, for the most part, people relate to the combination of Meeting and lunch. It works either way.

Munch as a noun:

Something to eat; a meal, a snack. Also: an act of munching.

example of early usage:

1819 T. THOMPSON Canny Newcassel in Coll. of Songs 9 Wiv a' the stravagin aw wanted a munch.

Munch as a verb:

To eat (food) with a continuous and noticeable chewing action; to eat eagerly and audibly, or with evident enjoyment; to make a snack of.

1425 (c1385) CHAUCER Troilus & Criseyde I. 914 Some wold monche [v.rr. muchche, mucche, muche, meche] her brede alon, lying in bed and make hem for to grone.

exact definitions and examples thanks to the OED

so i suppose the natural assumption would be .. because it involves food.

Bingo!

The first munch (in April, 1992 IIRC) was announced by STella in a post to the newsgroup alt.sex.bondage. She called it a burgermunch because the first one was held at a hamburger take-out place named Kirk's in Palo Alto.

The rest is history.

Well! It seems I was reading too deeply into it. I was thinking along the lines of, "because people get the munchies after expending a lot of energy doing WIITWD..." }:D

“I admit it, you are better than I am!”
“Then why are you smiling?”
“Because I know something you don't know!”
“And what is that?”
“I... am not left-handed!” *switches hands on the speculum*

Because were addicted to being looked at from our terminology as morons geeks and kooks? Because were all secretly trekkies?

We go to meetings. Might be nice to call them meetings, then people would just think were drunks.

Was that based on what they do or how they act? M

Hmmm ... I'm not questioning this, since I don't know the answer, but I remember that a Boston BBS called Argus (now defunct, like all BBS's) had something very much like munches even before that. I was sure they were called "munches," but now I'm starting to wonder.

Oh, and they were vanilla.

I was a member of Argus (and Channel One) and I can't recall there ever being any munches there.

Argus used to meet every once in a while in the food court of that mall in Cambridge--I forget what it's called. (Maybe it's Cambridgeside? Haven't been back to Boston in a while.) And maybe they didn't call it a "munch," but that's what I remember.
