Status: offline 		I've recently noticed some online "romantica" publishers (romance plus erotica) are looking for what they call "BDSM romance."

A bunch of thoughts ran through my head when I first saw the term BDSM romance ... like, suddenly I felt so warmly mainstream. And yet I was worried, too. What KIND of bdsm? I mean, these books are for vanilla romance readers. Here's a description of one of the books:

Black Widow

Calder has been assigned the task of infiltrating the local BDSM community for a magazine article. Using an old college connection, he attends incognito an event in a modern dungeon. All he wants is a clinical, unprejudiced view of the world of BDSM.

Kelly is a lonely widow ready to live again. Her profession as the infamous Dominatrix, The Black Widow, has brought her fame and fortune, but not love. She accepts a passionate challenge from this man who won't submit.

Calder is bewitched and beguiled by Kelly and her world of trust, intimacy and power-exchange. Their journey of discovery will lead into the depths of both their souls where dominance and submission have no meaning. But through it all, Calder must keep his occupation secret, or risk the bite of the Black Widow.

Status: offline 		There's already a Cruise/Kidman movie called "Eyes Wide Shut" with trippy piano music and everything... wasn't Cruise Calder in that, perhaps that was Part I?

Maybe you are reading groundwork for "Eyes Wide Shut - Part II"?

With books like "Story of O", and movies ("O", "Secretary", etc), vanilla world interest in the BDSM lifestyle is peaked, and it stands to reason commercial involvement of publishers and movie makers in anything "trendy" is the norm.

Cleavage, bouncing breasts/protruding nipples and hints of no panties are what appeal to men... just ask the commercial advertisers for booze, autos, colognes, credit cards, etc.

BDSM Romance? heh!... we don't need no "steenking" BDSM Romance!

Don't "Bogart" that BDSM Romance my friend... pass it over to me!

In fact let me give you a plot summary.

She falls madly in love with him and leaves the foolish whip behind because love cannot be found in a dungeon. Close with a picture of a shirtless man and a St. Stephen's cross.

Are you writing the story with your Master?

Like iwill suggested, I'd love to read your story too, but wouldn't posting it here make the story "published" in the eyes of another publisher?

I have posted about this before but will summarize here. Myself, an online g/f and an online dom took turns writing chapters of a story. In the story i am the slut/sub, my g/f is the high class g/f to the dom, who is a weaalthy travelling businessman. It was my first attempt at porn but my g/f had published some in the past, so she helped me a lot. She plans to edit it sometime in the future, change the names (we used our real first names) and prepare it for publication. It is about 100 pages of emails i think. The problem is the dom quit before we finished it because his wife became very ill, so we need an ending to it. It's too long to publish here, plus i don't have it on my puter anymore, only a hard copy, sry. It was a lot of fun to write, lots of unexpected twists, and it's not just about sex.

You know how in your profile you say how you'll let your partner play naked on the beach smelling of coconut oil all over?

I love Anne Rice's Vampire series, especially "The Vampire Lestat" and "Tale of the Body Thief." The characters are fully fleshed out and developed and the vividness with which she describes their motives and personalities made them almost leap out of the page at me.

I thought her Sleeping Beauty series and most of her other BDSM-oriented writing wasnt worth the paper it was printed on. She spent 0 time on motivations or descriptions and it seemed like an unimaginative laundry list of various BDSM activities. If she could describe the characters in Sleeping Beauty and their relationship with the same sort of detail as she describes the two main characters (whose names escape me at the moment) in the Body Thief, they would have been wonderful to read.

Hell- the characters in 'Beauty' had been as well written as the DOG in body thief!!!

Actually it was one of my favorite fictional dogs- right behind the stray in Koontz's 'Eyes of the Dragon'....

Status: offline 		Granted, the Beauty series could have been better written - but I believe ( and I could very well be mistaken in this) that it was written early in her career as a writer - and may, therefore, be early in her learning curve on how to flesh out characters.

That said, I find the Beauty series to be wonderful mind candy for light reading when all I am looking for is something to pass the time.

Back to the original topic of the thread, maybe I am just paranoid, but it looks to me to be a possible venue for BDSM bashing, or for pointing out how 'sick and perverted' 'those people' are, etc.

I have found some ecouragement in the more positive portrayals of the BDSM lifestyle that have made their way before the pulic in recent years ("The Secretary", CSI episodes), however, there is still a long way to go before the lifestyle gains a more public acceptance.JMO

You make me very sad I can't get CSI. (We don't have cable.) Say, did you see that court TV special? The trial concerned a young woman who was murdered. She was tied up in "ritual" fashion, and tossed in the sea. The defense tried to explain she might have died from a heart ailment during a scene (not their words), accidentally, because of too vigorous sex. I don't understand the concept of vigorous bondage sex. Use of bungee cords? Anyway. The guy was convicted.

Returning to the topic, I think a these bdsm romances won't diss so much as much as dilute. I mean bdsm can't be portrayed as too "sick or perverted" because I'm assuming the novels are intended to titillate the reader with edgy sex.

And I agree with iwill's proposed ending. The moral of the tale of the black widow will end up being "A Mistress needs to bottom to be happy..."

Status: offline 		Yes, I did watch it - specifically because in the teasers they mentioned her living an alternative lifestyle - seems like much of defense litigation these days - smear the victim with as much mud as you can and hope enough sticks to get your client off.

I do not have cable either (dont watch enough tv to justify paying for it) - and CSI is on broadcast channels - CBS affiliate - I am only familiar with the original (Las Vegas based) series, not the CSI Miami or the new CSI New York (I mainly work 3ish til midnight) - but the original is coming out on dvd format - so far the first 3 seasons are out - and that includes both shows based in the BDSM house (seasons 2 and 3) - the dvd sets are a bit pricey ( about 70 bucks per set or more ) but I have no complaints about the investment so far.

Like I said, probably just my paranoia and or cynicism and or pessimism showing - actually I do hope the books portray the lifestyle in a good light - the only good thing about being a pessimist is that you only get good surprises
